Default BES 7290 to 8700 Help

Please Login to Remove!

I have searched for about an hour and have not seen an answer so I will post looking for assistance.

My company provided me a 7290 to use for Data only on the BES. I told them I wanted to try out an 8700, they said no. I said I would pay for it, they said they would not support it (OFFICIALLY). They said if I can get it to work, they will unofficially let me add my voice to it as well.

Can I go buy my 8700 from Cingular (with the help of my company cell phone girl) transfer my 7290 account on my BES to the 8700 without the assistance of a BES Guru at the home office. Or do I need to start the bribery?

Thanks in advance - Sully

I did just that - swap the SIM from your 7290. Upgrade your desktop to 4.1 and then connect it and it shopuld be good to go. The only problem you'll have is pulling the SIM out of the 8700 - I used a bullnose pliers

I appreciate your reply. The corporate Cing team says my 8700 is on its way. I guess I will use the tape trick discussed earlier to get the SIM card out.

I must be the only person who slipped the 8700 SIM card out using my fingernail. No tape, plyers or fork lifts required.

My current Blackberry SIM card says ATT Wireless and so does the BB 7290 on the outside and the start up splash screen. I believe if I get an 8700c this will be on the Orange network will I have an issue using BES?

It will work fine. Blue AT&T Sims work fine in the 8700c.
Just go with it... You are stressing out too much on this. Many of us have done exactly the same thing and written it up in the forums already..

Well I went for it and it did NOT work. We put the ATT Blue SIM with BES and Voice from the 7290 in 8870. The voice worked but not the BES. I think this has to do with the PIN.

Strange - my SIM is an ATTWS and the one I pulled out was an Orange Cingular. When you connected to the desktop did it recognize the device as having a different Pin ? Mine initially asked if I wanted to use this new device.

There was the step I missed. I had not connected to the desktop yet. It DID recogize the new pin and syncronized everything for me. I am ready to roll!!!

Thanks to everyone for their assistance!!!

Smile worked for me

I pulled out my Blue AT&T from my 7100g and everything worked fine...not a single glitch...voice and BES data (data after I connected to the computer of course and synched with the new PIN). I was already on the 4.1 desktop software.

btw...I also used needle nose pliers to pull the new sim chip from the 8700....was worried I would push my finger through the damn unit trying to get it out by hand.

I didn't use anything, when I got my 8700, it was in a sealed box and there was no SIM in it yet. The SIM was still on the punch out card. Since it was the same as my current 7290, I just poped out my current one and put it in the 8700. I could see how getting one out would not be fun, getting it in was no joy either compared to the 7290;)

Default 7290 to 8700c

I just upgraded my device from the 7290 to the 8700c, and it works just fine. As already discussed, just to a full backup of the 7290's data, upgrade to the 4.1 desktop software, pop out the SIM card from the 7290, put it into 8700, do a full restore, and away you go!

The keys on the 8700 are a little smaller, and the quality of the buttons doesn't seem to be as solid (8700's buttons have a cheaper, plastic feel), but the device does feel faster, and the browsing does seem a little faster (using the EDGE network).
