Default turn off ev-do?

I have a 7130e from Verizon. When I am in the Boston area and within ev-do coverage, the battery life is excellent. However I live about 60 miles from Boston where there is no ev-do coverage. Here, my battery life is very short, about 5 hours of standby before the wireless shuts off. I know that the ev-do capable phones from Verizon can be set to use the 1x network only. does anyone know how to do this to the blackberry?
