Default Updating the firmware on 7100x

Firsly, is it possible to do this? If so, how?

I keep getting the egg timer a lot and the phones gone slower over the past day - I wonder if its buggy firmware or an OS?

Its an O2 (UK) phone and its running 4.0.2
