I am a user and fighting with our techies about making address book available while the BB is locked.

Our device allows to make outgoing calls while the BB7290 is locked but you have use either speed dial codes or dial the number which means in today's world memorize all the numbers.

I am sure that the creators have addressed this issue but our folks just refuse and say it cannot be done. They even had denied outgoing calls while locked, but when I challenged them with help of this forum they had no choice but to activate that capability.

You help will be highly appreciated.

Part of the purpose of locking the device is to keep people from getting into the contact list. I am surprised to hear that a call can be made while the device is locked, and I would be 10 times more shocked if it were possible to access the address book while locked...I highly doubt its possible....

In a couple of threads I have read that it is possible, but somehow they did not mention how activate this feature.

The key purpose of locking the device is to protect emails, and not to prevent people from using the phone in a convenient fashion.

It is possible to make calls while the device is locked if 2 things are done:

1 - The BES Admin updates the IT Policy to allow it
2 - The user changes the setting in the security options. The option is added when the device receives the IT Policy, but by default the value is set to 'No'.

The reason you can't access the address book is so people cannot take advantage of it if you lose the device or if it's stolen. The purpose of allowing you to make the call in the first place is, perhaps, to call back someone who just called you (and maybe you missed the call). I thought it was kind of weird when we turned it on (I'm the BES Admin), but I can see the purpose of protecting the address book.

BTW, this is only available with BES 4.0 and HH code 4.0 or higher.

I understand that part and today I am able to make outgoing calls while the device is locked.

The problem is that to make an outgoing call I cannot use my address book to select the phone number I want to call or if I have missed a call I will not be able to return the call till I unlock the device.

If security of the phone book was eliminated as a concern how would one achieve this capability?
