Hello all,
I am new to the forum and just wanted to know if there was any software that can be downloaded so that I can view picture attachments on my Blackberry 7280. I recently downloaded version 4.0 and I noticed that there was a icon on there in which you could store and view .jpg files. but I was unble to use it. I heard that the Blackberry 7290 has the capability to view attachments, but I dont wanna spend an extra $300 just for one feature.
Hopefully, someone can give me some advice or direction on what applications exsist for this (if it can be even done at all on a 7280)

I could suggest you do a search for one of the dozens of posts on how to view JPG/GIF files, but this is just easier:

You can not view JPG attachments until you have BES 4.0 and Handheld 4.0 code installed. If you do not have both pieces, the only way to get pictures/images onto your BlackBerry is to post them to a web site, point a browser to the site, select and download the image.

I have a 7290 CIngular but even tho the HELP screen says when you get an email attachment you can hit menu and go to "open attachment" such a thing does not exist. Sometimes with a text attachment there is that menu item, but never with a JPG. And there is an icon with JPG photos thata come with it, and they open without a problem.

Is there a solution to this delema?

Open Photo Attachment works if you have a BES -- it would cost $10 to $25 additional per month. Additional advantages includes a bigger Inbox, more reliable Internet capability (TCP/IP), better web browsing than BWC, and wireless over-the-air synchronization.

BES is the greatest thing ever. You can't have a blackberry without it! It's like a whole other cracked up experience

Mark and Brian, thanks for your replies. I am a sole user, no company nobody paying my bills. I am a retired guy who loves to keep in touch with friends. I was using a Treo 600 and hated the tiny keyboard so I (foolishly) moved up? to the Blackberry. BUt now I truly miss some of the add on apps such as AVANTGO (news etc) and VINDIGO (movie timetables, theaters, reviews, restaurants, etc...) and they do not support BlACKBERRY'S. (Cingular 7290) I am giving serous thought to going back to a Palm or Windows decice so I can get those add-ons I miss.
Regarding attachments - with the Treo I used Snapper Mail and could not ony access several mailboxes as I wanted to, but it easily handled attachments of all kinds - and as I had Word-to-go I could review photos, Exel and other docs from my emails.
I can't handle a bigger monthly fee than I already pay so a BES (whatever that is) is our of the question.
HOWEVER any ideas you may have to help me get more from my Blackbery might make a convert out of me.
I want my NEWS, and I want my Movie timetables and using the stupid Blackberry BROWSER is useless.

Peter, many sites are optimized for the mobile phone browser, but it's hard to find them. Accuweather is, and so I bookmarked the page AFTER I typed in my zip code, and I get instant weather any time I want it! Same with traffic, I went to google on my blackberry, typed in 805 north freeway speeds, and 805 south freeway speeds, and got the pages i wanted, book marked them, and now it's so easy.

It might be tough to find the stuff you want, but once you do, your set... Book mark it, and life is good!

Peter, it seems like you have made up your mind already. You seem to be someone who could get more use out of a Treo or WCE/WM device than a Blackberry. The Blackberry development market has not exactly been overly saturated with new products, so you may want to check back with the RIM world in another year or two... By then, Palm will have released their next OS that will have BB Connect loaded on it.
