Unhappy Vibration Profile bug on 7130?

Please Login to Remove!

I think I've found a bug in the way "vibrate" works in the profile setting of the 7130. I'm coming from a 7290 and 8700c on Cingular which did work the way I'm about to describe, but I belive that all the 72XX series worked this way.

To distingish between different call types when in the Holster, it was discovered by another poster that when you set the "In holster" to 'vibrate" and you set the "number of beeps" to 1, 2 or 3, the device would vibrate that number of times. So you could set SMS to "1" and Messages to "2" and Phone to "3" and you would get 1, 2 or 3 instances of vibration based on the message type you were receiving.

With my new 7130, no matter what I set those values to be, when I have "vibrate" set, the deivce vibrates just twice and that's it- regardless of message type.

This seems to be a bug. (My 7100g also worked the correct way when I had it about 9 mos. ago).

Anyway to report this to RIM?

I too want to have a different number of vibrations for a call versus an e mail. When in holster, I do not want to wip the 7130 out to see an e mail, but can't tell the difference with the present (flawed) method. You can't always hear the ringer while in holster.

I have tried multiple combinations to try to get this to work.

Any suggestions?

With every BB that I have owned I have only ever had it vibrate twice. I got around this using a small app called message alerts from the maker of webmessenger. It allows me to set email to one really long vibrate, just like the pagers of old. It works well for me. www.webmessenger.com

I found Message Alerts here. You are able to control e mail, sms and call alerts.

http://www.tucows.com/preview/421683

Once installed I set it up for one long vibrate when an e mail arrives. It works perfectly.

BUT

When the 7130 is in the holster, it reverts back to the two vibrate mode. $#@%^&!!!!! Holster mode is when I need it to work with one long vibrate. I guess sleep mode keeps MA from working properly.

It does have an import sound (ring tones) from e mail function (that I have not played with yet).

Right- this is definitely a "bug" in the 7130, or the goofballs at RIM just overlooked it. It definitely does *not* happen on our 8700's or 7290's0- when we set it for "in-holster" vibrate to 1, 2 or 3 'beeps' it works perfectly. I suggest we all report this to VZW and maybe they'll talk to RIM about it.

I tried Message Alerts. It works as designed when out of the holster. But the BB profiles dominate when in the holster.

Default Not Much Hope

I spent 1.5 hours on hold with RIM to ask about this. The rep checked both a 4.0 device and a 4.1 device and they behaved the same way, always vibrating twice. He said this "feature" had been removed from the code starting with 4.0.

His only suggestion is to email [email address], so everyone who misses it might want to do this.

I took delivery of a trial 7130 for the week and installed message alerts. I need to use this app and have been for the last almost two years and indeed discovered the same thing you did. I wanted the one long vibrate for messages and multiple short vibrates for phone calls (both in holster). I did a little more research and discovered that if you set the message in holster alert to none message alerts takes over and gives the desired effect. Give it a try, I think you will be pleased with the result.

Found another quirck. If you set the notification to "none" message alerts will notify you correctly but then when you pull the BB from the holster it won't open. I know there was a thread where indeed someone was looking for this behavior but I wanted my mail to open. So what I did was set the holster notification to tone and put it on mute. It now finally seems to work the way that I want it to.

My 7250 has variable vibration based on email vs. call. I am about to upgrade to the 7130e. Am I making a terrible mistake?

I have the same thing happening with my 7250, v4.0.2.41. I have it set to Vibrate with Number of Beeps: 1 when I receive an email while holstered but it vibrates twice. Also, I normally have my phone set to vibrate 3 times when holstered but I tried it at 1 but it did it twice. I guess it just doesn't like doing anything once.

I now have the 7130e. Profile is normal, with in holster set for vibrate for both messages and phone. When I get a message in holster, it vibrates twice. When I get a phone call in holster it continues to vibrate (ie, more than 2 times) until I answer or it goes to voicemail.

Does anybody know if there have been any new developments concerning this problem? I just recently bought a 7130c and would really like to be able to change the vibrate settings for incoming mail and phone calls.

Is the only option to purchase message alerts?

Thanks in advance for the help!
