Default New 8700 OEM plastic holster defective

Please Login to Remove!

As noted in this thread: Sleep Mode No Longer Working

It appears that the new version of the plastic holster issued with the 8700 is defective. The BB will not stay in sleep mode while in the holster, either the magnet is not large enough or not positioned correctly. As such, you don't receive the benefits of the "in holster" status and the battery is drained more quickly. Do any of you vets know the proper process to get RIM to replace the holster, not with another defective one, but with one that works?

Thanks, RC

I think your title might be a bit of an exageration.

I have the new version of the holder (as well as the old) and don't have any problems with the magnet functioning the way it's suposed to.

The magnet looks to be in the same location on both holsters to me.

I don't think its a bit of an exageration actually. I too have a few of the old cases and some of the new with the teflon strip. The magnets are, in fact, in the exact same spot. I've measured with calipers.
But something is going wrong. 2 of my 5 teflon cases will not lock the handheld upon holstering (proof it isn't going to sleep). 3 of them will just fine. All of our old cases without the teflon strip (10 of them), lock the blackberry fine. I've contacted RIM and it seems since it isn't EVERY teflon case the best course of action is to contact cingular for a replacement.

Perhaps a batch of magnets were defective. ie. They are not strong enough?
Just a shot in the dark, but based on Inphektion's finds I would say it is plauseable?

We'll see

its possible cause if I take the back of the case that doesn't work, where the magnet is bare, and put it against the spacebar the handheld locks instantly.

I can make the BB go to sleep just as Inphektion describes, but when it goes into the holster it appears that the magnet rests just slightly above the space bar. As such the BB revives itself.

Igreenberg, while your holsters may be working fine, mine is definitely defective.

Alternatively, the contact point within the BB itself, could have shifted and that could be the cause of the non-sleeping device.

Inphektion, in your situatiuon where 2 of the 5 will not lock the BB, have you switched out the BB's to the case, to be certain it is the case and not the BB?

I was in no way disputing the fact that your holster may be defective. I just thought a blanket statment such as "New 8700 OEM plastic holster defective" is a bit misleading. By your own admission they are not all defective. That's all.

After talking to one of my co-workers who also recently purchased an 8700, we discovered that his does not go to sleep properly in the plastic holster.

I have noticed that right before it clicks into the locked in position, the screen goes out and it goes into sleep mode. But once it is locked in, the screen comes back on. So the magnet on the holster and the contact point inside the blackberry are not aligned properly. The magnet is too high or the contact point is too low. I tried putting a bit of tissue in the bottom of the holster to raise the BB up a bit, but raise it high enough were the contact is properly made, the device will not lock into the holster.

I have one BB in front of me (my own) and many cases. What I have done is put my BB into one where it didn't work (2 total), but in the other 3 it worked. ALL of the old cases it worked. That leads me to believe it isn't the BB but the cases themselves.

As I posted in the linked thread at the top of this post, my BB doesn't recognize the magnet at times. It fails primarily when I wear the holster in a horizontal mode.

When it does fail, I can push in (towards my body) at the lower part of the BB and it then goes to in-the-holster mode. I can hold the holster in my hand, insert the BB and it fails at times. When it fails in that situation, I can place my index finger over the magnet (on the back of the holster), place my thumb on the lower portion of the BB battery cover, squeeze, and watch the BB go to sleep mode.

My problems just started a few days ago. I believe, at least in my case, that normal use has caused a change in the way the BB seats in the holster, especially when worn in the horizontal mode. I also believe that a larger magnet or some other holster redesign will eventually be required.

Thanks Inphektion. I just got off the phone with Cingular. They passed me to RIM, who passed me back to Cingular. It appears that Cingular will only replace the entire phone and holster, not just the holster. Which seems stupid.

I may just wait until the OEM leather holster comes out and get that one.

I was lucky enough to walk into a cingular store and have them give me a new holster. The one I got with my 8700c didn't put unit in sleep mode

I finally cut out the magnet in my old soft side holster from my 6280, and have taped it inside the plastic holster for the 8700, and it will now align properly with the device and go to sleep. Until then I will wait for the OEM leather holster.

Has anybody heard any more about the availability of the OEM leather holster? Also, anybody find the plastic holster for sale anywhere but shopblackberry.com? $14.99 for the holster and then almost $10 to ship it is crazy....

I had no problems with mine straight out of the box. My intermittent problem started after about a month of use. In a vertical carry my BB fails to go to sleep about half the time when it's holstered. And about 90% of the time when holstered while in a horizontal carry. I have now developed the habit of pressing on the bottom of the BB towards my body after it has been holstered.

Where is that OEM leather holster?
