8830 - Wireless Google Calendar Sync?

Anybody know at what OS version wireless Google Calendar and Contacts sync works? I just picked up an 8830 and updated to OS 4.5 (the latest/greatest for this model). I simply cannot get wireless sync to work with Google Calendar and Contacts. I just got all this working on a newer 8330 Curve running OS 5.

I downloaded the Enhanced GMail Plugin.
Set my Default Services to my GMail account.
Deleted and re-added my GMail email account.
Pulled the battery a dozen times along the way.

No joy. Every time I try to enable wireless sync I find there is no option to change the setting from No. It's not grayed out, it's just that there is no other option besides No. I fear that OS 5 may be the minimals for this service.

If anybody has wireless calendar and contacts sync working with Google on an 8830 please chime in. I could use either encouragement or the straight up news that it just won't work.

According to this, 4.5 *should* work for the Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in

Thanks. I was afraid of that. At least I can stop banging my head against the wall trying to figure it out.

I picked up a Curve 8330 and an 8830 world phone as backups/vacation/beach devices. Looks like the Curve will go with me to Ocean City.
