I was told that after I fully charge my new BB, I should let it drain completely and re-charge a few times. Then I no longer need to do this.

I don't believe there is anyway to turn off USB cable charging.

I wouldn't worry about the USB cable charging your battery. Just let the battery fully discharge 2-3 times by using it more before you charge it. The only time you are going to be using the USB cable is to synch one or twice a day. This short 10 seconds synch is not going to do much in the way of charging. Here is a good link.
