is this actually available to the general public or is this the press release from two weeks ago simply announcing it?

IMHO this is the best looking 7100; even better than the rumored 7100g. I'm in London until mid-February, so I called O2 business sales out of curiousity. I'm told that I should be able to order phone parts through their department, but the phone hasn't been released yet. It might be available next week so I'll wait a bit and give it another shot. For anyone interested, the O2 business sales line is 0800 089 0250 or 08457 525 252. That might work from the US by dialing 011 44 845 752 5252. I own an unlocked 7100t and use it regularly in the US and UK. The plastics should simply swap out.

Are you saying one could just replace the plastics and turn the 7100t into a 7100x ?

No, I'm referring to the "guts" of the 7100 series. All of these 7100 variants likely use the same PCB, LCD and button placement. The "look" comes from the casing itself. Nokia was famous for doing this with their older phones in different markets; IE GSM version could be housed in CDMA version plastics.

Inside they are all the same. Only the outer shell is different.

How do you safely take apart and put together the phones?

You could also delicately hurl it onto the ground, or give it to a two year old to play with.

heh. well, there are two screws (alan wrench needed). and there are two side mounts. not sure if thats all. something tells me that the 'plastics' weren't designed to be swapped out.

The bottons are not identical for 7100x as the 7100t. I'm pretty sure that will not work... from what I can tell from the photos anyway.

Its not the externals they are talking about. Its the internals. They should be the same between all handsets, despite what the exterior plastics look like.

My understanding is that under the hood it is all the same. Cuts way down on development and production costs!

the bulk of it would be i would assume, you could afterall load the software onto it... but im not sure if the speakers/receivers and buttons are easily detachable and where you would purchase a keypad... and as i think of it, where would you get the plastic casing too?
