| | AIM (SMS) over GPRS/GPRS Preferred with 7100t
(Cross-posting from another forum, as no one had replied.)
I searched in this and other forums but found nothing conclusive... I'm using the 7100t with the T-Mobile BB Unlimited Enterprise plan.
Q1: Does switching SMS to use GPRS (or GPRS Preferred; set in Settings > SMS > Network To Send Over) allow AOL Instant Messenger to not use the allotted monthly SMS quota in my account?
A number of folks seem to have tried this and found that it is indeed the case (reportedly after having checked their subsequent phone bills). Others remained pessimistic, albeit the posts were from Oct 2004 and not from those who cared to try.
Q2: What is the difference between GPRS and GPRS Preferred settings?
Somehow when I tried "GPRS" setting on my 7100t, AIM failed during signon with "Communication error." However, with "GPRS Preferred" setting, AIM worked fine (just like with the default "GSM" setting). I'm certain that GPRS is available as I'm receiving my data OK (emails or web browsing).
From what I read so far, "GPRS Preferred" means that GPRS will be used if available; otherwise, it'd fallback on the other network (ie. GSM). But the aforementioned behavior I had observed just does not make any sense.
So, can I hear from those folks using the standard RIM AOL Instant Messenger software, with GPRS or GPRS Preferred SMS setting, a confirmation that it indeed would not count against the SMS quota? Are you using GPRS or GPRS Preferred?
I will try it myself and report back, but would like to hear other success stories.
