Amazon had the same deal for a while too. It was a 2 year NEW NUMBER comitment. It is talked about in some other threads. But this is the first I have seen the BUY.com one. BUY.COM and AMAZON do have some relationships though.

But the CINGULAR websites ARE chagning the prices right now depending on where you live.

If it's the same carrier, what would I gain by buying from Cingular directly and losing the rebates?

Also, do you think I could port my number from Verizon?

Yes and no,

While you might get good deals, you are going thru a 3rd party vendor. Most stores wont touch anything that didnt come from a store. You might save more initially, but the headaches could outweigh the benefits. As for number portability, I dont think 3rd party vendors offer it.

Corey G I just ran thru the purchasing process and it allows porting at buy.com
They offer a Buy.com credit card that cuts the price even more, so I think you can actually get a full 300.00 back and pay only 275 for the phone...
Edit:
I didn't buy the phone and plan,I was just checking out the deal, because I'm tearing myself up between GSM (The Future) or sticking with my Verizon with EVDO (and all the other phones in my family are Verizon).

Hang in there apple do not give in to the seduction and temptations, I know the spirit is willing and the flesh is weak, but just think of it this way, I am in the same identical boat as you, my entire family is on Verizon, I do not travel to areas that would benefit me to have a GSM phone, and finally all I can say is this, imagine for a moment what people are talking about when they brag of the 8700 and EDGE, well just cose your eyes for a minute, and think 8700 and EVDO, need I say more.

The count down has begun . . . *.*, 99, 98, 97, . . . Its a coming. Can you hear me now apple.

Just bought an 8700c from Amazon a few weeks ago and did not port the number from Alltel immediately as I want to make sure it was what I wanted. Then went to my local Cingular store and asked them to port the number over from an Alltel phone. Cingular was not a problem to deal with to port the number. Just make sure it is done BEFORE you close your other account. You could probably do it by calling customer support.
