Question New 8700 - Can I "port" a number within the same provider?

Please Login to Remove!

Maybe this is a simple question but my current account with TMO is out of contract and I went and took advantage of the USWIRELESS 8700 $99 deal. So my 7100x will be no more in a few weeks. My issue is that since the 8700 I ordered will be on a NEW account with a new number - can I keep my old account live until I get the 8700 set-up (which I will do regardless) and ask TMO to "port" my old account phone number with them to this new device even though it is also on TMO? 3 questions - can they technically do this? Do you think they would? If so - would there be some charge? I know they want to prevent "churn" but since the old account is out of contract I could go to another carrier so I am thinking they might do this for me? Any opinions?

I think I understand what you are saying and I think the answer is it's too late.

If you've already activated the new line it has a number associated with it. You now want to change the new number to your old. Porting allows you to activate a new line with an existing number not the other way around.

I may be wrong but that's how I see it. Best thing would be to simply call T-Mobile and ask.

Since your old account is out of contract, I would call Venicom (the USHOPWIRELESS company) and talk to them about it, just to have them notate in your account that you would still receive the appropriate rebates.

Once Venicom receives the units, they activate/assign all of them with a number. I spoke to a rep b/c I want to have as much choice as possible in choosing my new number, and she specifically assigned me a number NOT in my area so I could call later and tell them I need to change it to a local number.

I don't exactly know the policy of number portability, ie, who owns the number once a contract/service is discontinued. If it's possible, just cancel your TMO account and go back to them with the same number?

Or... wait 5 days, port your number to a different provider, and within a 14 day policy port it back over to TMO through Venicom. Just make sure Venicom knows you want to do a port.
