Default Charging battery via USB

Please Login to Remove!

Is it really necessary to install the Desktop Software in order to charge battery via USB?

Thanks

Try it. Or if you already have it installed, un-install the Desktop Manager, then try it.

You don't need the DM to charge, that is why you can buy travel chargers and car chargers

Maybe it is just the PC USB then. I have never tried to charge it via PC without the software installed.

You need the drivers. As long as the computer recognizes the type of device, it can power the USB port.

You do need the drivers....also...make sure it is a POWERED USB port! (not a front USB port on a dell or whatever, those aren't powered)

Top USB port on the Thinkpads is usually not powered. Try the bottom port.

I have a Dell and the USB cable connected to the front and it charges. Maybe just some aren't powered in the front. Or maybe I just got a one-of-a-kind Dell.

thatboiwes - is right.

Several DELL models (earlier models) do not offered powered front USB inputs.

Chances are if you dont have USB 2.0 you also wont get any power.

I have a lighter based charger (with a mini-USB plug) for my 8700c.

Works like a charm.

I personally have mixed success with charing without the drivers. If it is a wall plug or car lighter adpter those are usually fine. However on the PC without the drivers sometimes the BlackBerry starts to charge, sometimes it starts then stops, and sometimes is won't charge at all. It must have to be something with the OS not recognizing the device and cutting power to the port but that is just a guess. Likewise on my Mac if I plug it in it starts to charge but then stops because the device is not recognized and power is cut to the USB port. That was fixed with the installation of PocketMac which is now free for the BlackBerry.
