Default Err......Who here also uses a Treo/PPC

Please Login to Remove!

Just curious if any of yall are using any other *smartphone* or PPC to get email ?

Longtime BES user - current unit is a 8700.

I need to get a alternative PPC unit to use as well to stay on top of the smartphone market. It will most likely be a Treo 700W............

NO !!!!!!!!! don't do it my friend .... oh ok , maybe i'm going to far in my suggestion but plz try not to use a " smartphone " . i just tried the palm treo 650 and it was horrible ! i among other treo users i know ( 4 friends ) could not get the excellent service that i get on my BB 8700c with the treo . emails came when they wanted to with versamail ( treo ) and even worse with xpress mail since my home computer had to stay on the " redirect " all my mail to my treo . and then , instead of seeing my mail on my treo like a
BB i had to search for mail through my various names of accounts on my treo .... instead like a BB that links all email accounts to your phone and your done . plus my treo ( 2 units i used ) rebooted sometimes for no reason at all. another time i was reading an email and / or browsing when the treo just rebooted on its own . overall , nice looking but no brains .... like a 2.00 h**ker ! ....lol good luck though . just my .02

I've had just about all of 'em. The only PPC I haven't tried is the Treo 700 but used the 600 and 650.

And, I'm a huge gadget freak. I even went to Circuit City one day after the 700 came out to "convince myself" I needed it. I wouldn't give up my 8700 for anything else right now.

chefwong, the 700's nice but I think after being a longtime BES user, you'll be a little disappointed. I found PPC's are nice but constantly require soft resets and typically don't have great reception as phones. But that's just my opinion

ahhhh...I feel better now. All I have to hear is "soft resets" and "poor reception" and I get that bad blood out.

Ooh, joaquin brings up a good point... Versamail wreaked havoc on my Outlook account and I ended up spending the evening re-installing Outlook on my PC. If you go the Treo 650 route, try Snappermail. It worked really well for me and didn't kill Outlook.

I hear ya................this will supplement as I just need to have a PPC platform device for testing usability, etc. I've considered a Ipaq 2XXX series since I can/will connect via wireless internet but for true total testing - I may need a device with a phone platform.

I am not MOVING away from BES/BB platform. I just need to add the PPC / Good platform into my familiarility.

I have a T-Mobile MDA...
I would never use it for e-mail. But I have lots of nice Today screens.

I am using a Treo 600 for voice and 7100V for push e-mail. The one thing I will say about the Treo is there are websites I can go to on it's browser that I can't go to on my BB. I haven't had all of the typical crashing problems many Treo users have had. I haven't put alot of 3rd party apps on it either. I like the Treo and the Palm interface, but I have to say that the BB is much better. I will be saying goodbye to my Treo and moving to an 8700 soon.

Are you sure about the browser. With the 8700c, I can see full HTML images just like my PC and with nice speed as well.

I had the XDA IIs and honestly, I enjoyed the hell out of it. I wouldn't necessarily leave the BB for it since my needs are push email but still.

That's what seals the deal for me!

I have used a Treo for three years. I am going to drop it soon. The new BBs are so good that there is no reason to hang on to the Treo.

As I said in another post, I tried a Treo 650 after 3 BBs and really hated it. It's just so damn clunky and unstable. The phone is borderline useless, and despite small hands the keyboard is very hard to speed-type with. I have developed a major aversion to smartphones that require a stylus to operate... and don't be fooled by the Treo's claims of "one-handed operation" -- you need to go up, down, and sideways more times than PacMan just to dial a number. Went back to an 8700 and lovin' it. The Moto Q is pretty sexy but they appear to have major development and manufacturing issues, not to mention WinMo 5.0, so I expect it's more "show" than "go"... I'll probably buy one eventually but won;t make my previous mistake of selling my BB!

I was toting around PDA's long before I got my first BB. Started with a Palm Vx, then a Palm IIIc, then switched over to PPC with a HP Jornada 560. I moved to a HP 4150 after wearing out the text input area of the 560 and I currently use a Dell Axim X51v. My first BB was a 6210 that was taken out of service when it got dropped on its jog dial. I had it replaced with a 7780.

I can get email on my personal account through the PPC's WiFi, and the BB is tied into BES at work. Getting personal email on the BB is just a matter of logging into web client and telling it to start forwarding. I can access my Gmail account through either via the web browser.

The biggest reason I've stuck with PPC's is that there are a few applications for them that I use a lot, none of which are supported on BB's let alone even exist in a BB version. Then there's a lot of applications that I don't use that much but are very handy to have around, again none of which exist in BB verisions. I like my 7780 for what it is. It's an excellent email pager that I don't have to fuss with much that happens to do a decent job at mobile web browser when no WiFi is available. It doesn't have enough memory to do much anything else, but what it does do it does well. Basically, I see my PPC as something of a subsitute for a laptop that fits in a pocket. I think that's what they're best at being. A general purpose mobile computer. If you need a highly specialized device for email, then it will be a long time until a PPC can match the Blackberry. Microsoft has a lot of work ahead of them before they get to that point, but it wouldn't surprise me if they eventually get there.
