Talking Updating Verizon 7130e to 4.1.0.268 helped much

Please Login to Remove!

Last night I installed 4.1.0.268 onto my Verizon 7130e (from whatever version was present at manufacture time in late 2005), which had been plagued by "data connection refused" problems and (probably) associated short battery life. Anyway, today is first day "on the air" (in Denver, CO) with the fix, and it is a MAJOR change for the better. I have had NONE of the data connection refused states today (I would normally have 4-6 episodes by now), and while in my office what was usually a 1X indicator is now always 1XEV (in fact, I've not seen 1X today, and would see it at some locations before.)

As an added bonus, the javascript problems preventing proper use with "outlook web access 2003" websites appear to all be corrected - I've been able to send e-mails and interact with the calendar features, which I could not do before.

The only observation I have about the update process itself is that near the end of the cycle (waiting for the final phone reboot) the phone sits in it's boot-up stage (the rotating hourglass) for an abnormally long time (maybe 10-15 minutes); there is no mention of this long restart in the documentation, and if interrupted, it might cause problems, so just be patient there.

The software can be found at url dts.vzw.com

Thanks for the report. The new firmware also helps with the Bluetooth crashing problems reported on the fourms.

No, and they still don't mute keyboard tones (DTMF dialing and some other sounds) when in "silent" modes, which I find a totally unbelievable, obvious blunder. Also, there is no sign of "dial up networking" profile in bluetooth so the tethered modem feature is still only useful with a physical USB cable vs. bluetooth link, which is very unfortunate (my work-issued nokia 6682 is much better behaved in these respects.) Still, fixing the network EVDO problem seems solid, and hopefully they'll get a little creative in their next release(s).

On your BB click Options->About to find out which OS your are running. Then go to http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/ for the current version.

You upgrade using the Desktop Manager.

Run the downloaded update so the files expand to their proper place. Then in the Desktop Manager click the Application loader. Should recognize the new firmware.

The update procedure can be a bit confusing (I did not get specific instructions from Verizon wireless.) Go to dts.vzw.com, find software updates, then there are TWO separate programs involving the 7130. One of them is an updated version of blackberry desktop, the other is replacement software for the phone itself. The phone update software probably won't run less you have *some* version of blackberry desktop installed, because it needs the USB connection to download the firmware to the phone.

Once you have the phone able to talk to your PC, then you can install and run the phone software update program itself (it's about 37 megabyte download.) That software appears to handle everything end-to-end (backing up, allowing you to change some minor configuration options, installing the new software, and restoring your settings.) The only unexpected change in the phone after the procedure was that numerous prior Messages stored in the phone, that I had deleted over the last month of use or so, re-appeared and had to be re-deleted by hand (a time-consuming process because there is no delete-all option.)

In my case, I ended up unnecessarily restarting the machine after the phone update software was installed, but before the program actually did the updating of the phone itself (there were a few confusing dialog boxes, possibly because my PC is extremely old/slow.) Anyway, on the next restart, when blackberry desktop was started, it then discovered that the phone update software had been installed but the phone not yet updated, so it then started the phone update procedure.

There might have been a "how to" or "readme" but I did not seek out either - I just wandered through it. I did update from version x.x.x.117 to x.x.x.268 and the change in network performance was very much worth the half-hour or so it took to do the phone update. I do not know for sure if it is necessary beforehand to install blackberry desktop (another option available on the same webpage) but I did that anyway (it is over 120MB file and again took a fair while to install due to my slow computer.)

Hope this helps,

Dave
