So my back button (the one under the scroll wheel) has stoped working do to wear and tear I guess. I pushed it is once and it stuck. So should I:
A) go get teh T6 Torx and remove the cover and fix it
or
B) Call cingular and see if they would replace it. (I have had the phone since December)

My only objection to opening the unit is voiding the warrenty. If the plastic button has slipped of the contact then I would open it up hands down. I just am not sure if that is the problem. If it is great. If it isnt then I probably just voided my warrenty.
What are your thoughts?

I do not know the implications of the unlocking but it has a one year warranty against defects. This should qualify under the RIM warranty thru Cingular. Call them.

I think there is no harm in calling first. You never know if you come across a representative who will replace it. If you have no luck getting it replaced anywhere, then go ahead and open it. You have nothing to lose at that point.

You bought it from Cingular- there is a one year warranty, be it thru Cingular or RIM I am not sure. Just call Cingular and ask them. The thing broke and it is 4 months old, it's not like you ran it over with your car, it broke.

Did I mention you should call Cingular?
If not call RIM, Call somebody the thing should not have broken after 4 months.

Ok update,

I went thought the circle of getting no where. I called the cingular store, who connected me to the cingular customer service who connected me to the blackberry customer service who connected me to the cingular / Blackberry customer service. Basically they said that I could take it back to the store and I should be able to get it replaced. I on the other hand bought the T6 screw driver took it apart and refitted everything. Works great.

My point in trying to get you to avoid this is that now your warranty has been voided.
They would have exchanged it and if you have any new/ more problems you cannot exchange it now.

Good luck, glad you worked it out.

How will Cingular know the case has been opened? Is there a seal that is compromised once it is opened? Just curious

When you do a warranty exchange you agree that if the device has been dropped in water, opened or othrwise messed with then the warranty is void and they charge you for the device. You agree to this then ship it to them after you receive the new device. They have a department that goes over the returned items and I imagine they have a way to see if it has been opened (broken seal etc). It is not like the guy at the store or on the phone has the final say.

I returned a Nokia this way that had been water damaged, they saw that and charged me for the replacement ( at a lower cost than new ). You agree to the terms beforehand and it is up to them to determine fault or in/out of warranty.

Anyway, they have a pretty strong return / warranty system. How they would actually know I am not sure, but they would definately check.
