Sorry to hear about your pain. You are experiencing what is know as 'BlackBerry Thumb'.

You just gotta get use to it. However, if you can't, then maybe you should look at the 7290.

Try a bluetooth keyboard for when your sitting at the coffee shop and the likes. It really helps me with my bbthumb.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8700g: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

If this is your 1st BB then you will get use to it

I cradle it in both hands and type using my thumbs! The 7290 does have a bit wider keyboard.

yeah, the 8700g keyboard is the most cramped of all the other RIM devices (even more cramped than the 8700c).
I have slender fingers and I have a hard time.

I find it better to use only one hand and just type with 1 thumb.

You will likely get used to it. It will help if you make a point to RELAX your hands, and don't try to type fast just yet. Speed will build over time. Just stay loose and let your hand muscles adjust to it...

I suggest you minimize your use of the blackberry (at first).
Keep your typing at a minumum until your muscles adjust .
Over use can cause tendon problems in your hands, wrists & forearms.
I had this problem a couple of years ago when I first got a bb.
I wanted to learn it fast, but luckily my job kept me busy with other things, so I would use the blackberry only occasionally back then.
After awhile my hands adjusted and now I can (and do) use it through out the day, every day, but still if I over do it my hands will cramp, so I stop and wait till later. I've had tendonitis (spelling?) from playing sports and once you get it, it's hard to overcome.

btw; I don't have an 8700 yet, instead I use 7510 (nextel) & 7130 (verizon).

Well, like you said it is your first BB. This 8700g is my first BB too. ANd I loooove it! I defintely won't return it because of the keyboard. I got use to it after playing around with it all day! I got use to it pretty quick because its my first and I never experience any other bb or pda phones before. I hope you get use to it too. its a great phone!

I agree that the keys are bit too cramped on the 8700g. The key structures should have a slight dome on it also.
Truly speaking I found that the keys on the 8700c were slightly better.

I feel your pain--I've also come from the SK2. SK2's keyboard is muuuuuuuuuuuuch more intuitive.

my problem with the sk2 keyboard is that to type with one hand you need to hold it at an angle. ull get used to it in time. try having ur index fingers on the sides with teh middle ring and pinky intertwined on the back and the thumbs for hammering away. regardless ull get used to it

Good point though, I have the 7750 (only good for a few more days) and I am used to the keys. At first I hated it. Then again we all hated laptop keys because they felt different from the desktop keyboard (CLACK CLACK CLACK). I guess I will get used to the 8700 (when I get it).
