Got my 8700g today (upgrade from 7290) and wanted to get it working as the wireless modem for my laptop, so here's what I did - and it is pretty damned quick!

First, make sure you are running the latest version of desktop manager download it from blackberry dot com - I don't know if it is a requirement, I just did it as a matter of course.

Second, follow the setup instructions for the 7290 found on this site (I haven't posted enough times to do links, so just look under Blackberry Guides), with one difference, DO NOT DO STEP 8.

That's it, you're done, it works and it is fast - you still get a little lag when your browsing, but once the page start loading it is very quick.

I had the 8700g as a PC modem working fine, used it for almost a week.

One fine day when I was using it as a modem I saw an hourglass on the blackberry screen. It was there for a little bit as if somthing was automatically getting loaded, after that I saw a screen saying your "security settings" are getting updated. After few seconds the screen became normal.

Since then I have not been able to use the device as a modem, I keep getting the error "Remote computer terminated the connection". I have no idea what got updated on my device for this behaviour.

Anyone seen this problem?

Do you have a full backup saved?
maybe a reload...?

I tried it yesterday when my internet was down. Xp could not detect my BB as a modem. Desktop manaqger was running and it showed connected. I have latest tmo DM and oS. I can't figure out why.

Did you backup your bb?

What error message do you get after the drpdown dialer tries dialing tmo?

It didn't try dialing. it will not even detect that the BB is plugged in. I went to Control Panel> Modem and Phone options and it only recognized the modem built in to laptop. I didn'''t see any explanation in the guide for what to do.

What kinds of speeds are you getting from your 8700's when connected as a modem?

There are several threads specifically talking about that topic. Search for them first.

I see there are settings for TMO USA users but what about in GER?? I see no options for any GER carriers in the FAQ.

I'll b staying in the "old" east GER for a couple weeks and WiFI is not that prevalent. I NEED to bring my laptop and am concerned about a general lack of wireless coverage there.

Is anyone using their BB as a modem in GER and which particular settings did you implement?

Okay, so, I just got my 8700g Thursday, and I'm excited about using it as a modem for my computer.

I set it up per the guide on BlackBerryFAQS.Com, and I get an error.

So, I searched the BB Forums. This is the only thread I found specific to setting up the 8700g on T-Mobile. I tried the changes mentioned by the original poster......And now I'm having the same exact problem quoted above!

What the frak is going on here?!?

Is anyone successfully using their T-Mobile 8700g as a modem as of December 26th, 2006?

If so, PLEASE SHARE YOUR SECRET(S) IN THIS THREAD! Because I'm starting to suspect something's fishy here! It must be those frakkin' toasters, they're always up to no good!

And if this question is answered in another thread, DO NOT just post "use search" or your comments WILL be reported to a mod! I DID search, and this is the only thread I found, other than the 20-pages long thread in the BB Guides section. Tomorrow I will be trying a couple more things I saw mentioned in that thread, but in the meantime, if someone is currently getting the 8700g to work on T-Mo and would care to post PRECISELY how they got it to work, step-by-step, I'd be much obliged.

That sometimes happens to me. Usually I restart the computer and the BB (by pulling out the battery) and after everything boots up it works fine.
