Default 8700c external speaker problem

Please Login to Remove!

About a week ago my external speaker stopped working (no speakerphone, ringtones, app sound effects) Everything else worked fine. After using javaloader to wipe and reload the software to make sure it wasnt a software problem I called RIM to determine who would warranty my device. I have a unlocked 8700c and have never had an account with cingular. RIM said they wouldnt warranty the device and ditto with T-Mobile. T-Mobile suggested I file a claim with insurance so I called them. After going through a big song and dance the insurance company told me they didnt know what phone they could give me (8700g or 8700c) and that in either case the phone I get would be locked.

So... I went to the local nextel service center where I know a tech and they were able to replace the speaker (its a off the shelf part form motorola) for thirty bucks. Those who have unlocked BB's beware!! luckily it was cheap to fix

This is what I get from rim's web site http://blackberry.com/support/warranty/index.shtml

Quote:
All BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds™ (including the BlackBerry cradle and holster) purchased from Research In Motion (RIM), or an authorized dealer of RIM, come with a one (1) year limited warranty whereby:

RIM warrants that the BlackBerry handheld, cradle and holster will be free from defects in workmanship for one (1) year and will replace, refurbish or repair, at its option, the BlackBerry handheld and/or any of its components found to be defective.

The limited warranty does NOT apply to:

Reasonable wear and tear of the BlackBerry handheld, cradle or holster.
Scratches or cracks to the LCD screen.
Damage caused by accident, misuse, abuse, neglect or misapplication.
Defects due to repairs or modifications made to the BlackBerry product by anyone other than RIM or its authorized service representatives.

they told me that it was under warranty but it had to be serviced through a carrier IE t-mobile or cingular. Also even if t-mobile or cingular would fix it they would more than likely send me a different locked device

You can't choose if you want service with TMobile or Cingular? You could get a new phone out of the deal, it just has to be locked to one or the other.

Why not just get the phone through whichever carrier you're currently using? If you're on TMO you can get it unlocked through them.

I don't want to commit to a one year agreement.
