Hey.... I went to the nextel store today, and the salesman was telling me the 7100I has very limited text messaging capabilies. Not sure if he really knew what he was talking about, so I figured id ask on here. With the 7100I, can I send messages just like I did on my other nextels? Is is true that you cant just send text messages to a phone # on some phones? You have to compose them as an email??

Any info would be appreciated!

You can receive SMS messages via Nextel, but not reply to them. Instead, you must send MMS messages. If you send an MMS message with just text, you will be billed $.10 as if it were an SMS, unless you have text messaging included your plan.

If you're getting the red X when trying to send MMS, then call customer care and ask them to provision your service. This doesn't cost you anything, but apparently it's necessary to ask. (Maybe because they don't want everyone using this feature).

or you could just pin the person. I can do it for free all the time. I pin my wife and she can answer and it is very fast. she cannot start a pin msg but can answer one so she keeps one pin to answer when she wants to start a msg. unlimited and very fast. almost instant!

It is similar and the person you talked to didn't know what they were talking about. When you are on a name in your address book, click the trackwheel and look for "MMS John Doe". That's it. Just like a regular text message

I have a 7100i and I do not have the MMS menu option in my contacts nor anywhere else. It's not even mentioned in the BB's helpfile.

I contacted Nextel and asked them to provision my handset, as I paid for the 100 text messages a month plan. They walked me through how to force the BB to get the Service Books by doing the following:

1. Go to Options->Security Options->General Settings->Click trackwheel->Master Radio Reset. '0000' is the password.
2. Pull the battery.
3. Hold power button for 30 seconds
4. Reinsert battery. Wait for bootup.
5. Turn on radio, wait for 'NXTL'
6. Go to Options->Advanced Options->Advanced Routing->Click trackwheel->Register Now. Do this 3 times and wait for 3 message confirmations to be sent to your phone.
7. Check Options->Advanced Options->Service Books->(MMS Client Service should be listed here.)

But it still doesn't show up. I'm starting to get peeved that text messaging isn't supported on a device so advanced. And no, I don't want to pay $50 for a BB Data Plan, my home connection is only $40 and is much faster and more useful.
