John, I'll try to answer that for you - as I'm liking 2.0.

* Your inbox is now "unlimited" space, vs. a 25MB limit on 1.8. I ran up against that limit a couple times (due to several large attachments), and the business mail that my server was forwarding to BIS was bouncing back to the sender, without any notice to me at all.

* Mails sent from my BB now show up and appear to be from the "real" address, not from <myname>@mycingular.blackberry.net as they did with 1.8. 1.8 set the "ReplyTo" address correctly, but still exposed that it was sent from the blackberry.net address - and 2.0 doesn't. They also now show to be from the "correct" email address, of several I have coming in to BB - where in the past I had to remember to manually set the proper "ReplyTo" address via BBReply.

Both of those things contribute to me projecting a much more "professional" stance with people I'm communicating with using BB.

Thanks, I guess it is going to be good if it fits your needs.
I use the Gmail forwarding setup and thus get my BB e-mails instantly, any atttachments I need on the BB I save. I use Repligo. I then POP Gmail and have those e-mails on Outlook Express. I never use the BIS to hold or view mail.

The Gmail setup gives me my "professional" stance ( very important as you point out) by having all of my e-mails show the same reply to which is [email address].

Thanks DF for the input as I am trying to see the draw and if I should make the move. Nothing jumps out at me yet but as you point out - it is great for some people, it depends on the user.

I like having the seperate message boxes. I like that I can reply and it automatically has the correct reply email address. I like that in the message when it is delvered, it states where I am in the email (To or CC), which is important for my line of work. Easier integration and seperation of mutiple email accounts (personal vs business). Unlimited space.

I like having the most up to date things (themes, OS etc) but cannot see why I should upgrade.

Which one is better for the 7130c?

CryptMagic vs MiniSafe

Umm, just a thought, but since this is:

a) a thread about Cingular BIS 2.0

b) in the forum about "General 8700 Series Discussion"

Maybe there might be a better place to ask a question about a totally different piece of software as it relates to a totally different model of BlackBerry?

I have seen references regarding the "no folders" aspects with BIS 2.0.

With 1.8, I could set my BB so that any message I sent from the BB was automatically saved in the "Sent" Folder and did not show up on the main email screen.

Now, with 2.0, I cannot see any "sent" messages in the "Sent" folder. The only way I can see "Sent" messages is if I change the "Hide Sent Messages" to "No" but then I can only see the sent messages on the main screen. Still nothing in the folder.

Am I doing something wrong or with 2.0 can I no longer have the "sent" messages automatically saved in the "Sent" folder without showing up on the main email screen (which means they are deleted when I use the "Delete Prior" command, something that did not happen under 1.8.)

Sorry for the apparently confusing post, but I am just trying to understand what is going on.

I have all my personal mail forwarded to my blackberry email address (for the instant receipt). That seems to be working fine. My BES connectivity for work email works fine too.

I went in and changed the "email account name" on the BIS to be my personal email address (rather than the blackberry email address), which now sets the sent from address correctly.

However, I'm confused about two "features" of the new 2.0 service

1) What does it mean when it asks me whether or not I want to delete the mail from just the handheld or the handheld and the mailbox? Since I'm actually deleting mail from a blackberry.net account, is there any difference? It's not deleting mail from my actual mail server (as far as I can tell), which is fine by me.

2) I still have three options (Web Client, my New Email Account Name, Desktop/Secure (which is my work/BES account)) for the "Send Using" menu. Doesn't currently seem to be a difference between what happens with the first two. Shouldn't there only be two options (the new email account name and desktop/secure)?

Just want to make sure nothing weird is happening behind the scenes.

I guess the third question is: should I change just ditch the "blackberry.net" email address and set up BIS to directly check my POP/IMAP account? I don't think they have instant-push for third-party accounts, which is why I set up an auto-forward.

1) You can disable the prompt to erase from Handheld, or Handheld and Mailbox. Go to Options in the Inbox, then go to Email Reconciliation, then change the option for Delete On. If you have any account configured to POP, it will actually go back in and erase the email if you choose the Handheld and Mailbox option.

2) If you only have the default mail account configured in your BIS 2.0 screen, Web Client and your New Email Account are actually one and the same. However, if you have more than one account configured, the Web Client one would be the default one (the one associated with [email address]) and the New Email Account one would be whichever secondary account you configured.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the answers. #1 took care of that issue. If I understand correctly, I could choose to get rid of the forwarding, have the BIS (2.0) check my POP/IMAP account directly, and then using the "delete from mailbox" would actually delete from my personal email account. That could be nice, but I'd lose the instant push I'm getting with the forwarding set up.

With #2 I guess that means that I have two identical "Send Using" or "Received Using" options, since I only have the default one set up. Anything wrong with that?

Also, if I read other posts on this thread correctly, there's no more internet/web mail access for BIS, only handheld access and (in my case) the originating email account (since I'm forwarding all mail). Any mail that gets deleted from the handheld (either actively, or after it expires 30 days later) is just gone. No need to "manage" my BIS folders or whatever.

Default 29.99 not available in Lake Charles, LA?

Hello,

I just called the "data" group phone number I had on file, gave him the SOC code and description listed in this thread, he placed me on hold and called another account rep, came back and said there was no 29.99 BIS option.

He said it could be location specific and not available in our area, or be a special promotion?

Anyone have any feedback on this before I call back and try again?

Thanks

For the pricing plan I would just call Cingular straight up, not BB tech support or"Data" group as you called it.

The sales people are the ones who deal with plans, call Cingular and ask for sales or just tell the pewrson who picks up the phone what you want and give them the SOC code. Should not be location specific and it is not a promotion- it is a plan.

You will need to call BB tech support after you get the new plan and the sales guy screws up your Browser settings.

Default strange messages after upgrading to 2.0

Since upgrading to 2.0 I have been receiving many messages like the one below. Any idea what may be causing this. I do not use nor have I ever used Redirector.

Thanks

did you perhaps sync your handheld w/ someone else's computer that had redirector installed? even jsut to charge it w/ deksop manager open?

theses messages are caused by desktop service books and redirector. double check you don't have any desktop service books on your handheld

yeah, thanks cingular for 'lowering the price' of BB data plans. So the people who don't use BES can pay a little less for unlimited data, my 4mb plan (which connects to my BES) now went up from $34.99 to $39.99 and unlim is still 49.99

leave it to cingular to keep f*ing me with data fees
that tmo 8700 is looking better and better every day

Default Walt Mossberg in WSJ on various devices & carriers

In today's WSJ, Walt Mossberg, who is pretty good for a non-techie, but business oriented tech advisor recommended Treo over BB and Verizon (because of speed) over other carriers.

I am pretty sure I want to get a BB 8700, which Verizon does not yet offer. Is there any good reason to get a diferent Verizon available BB versus a 8700 from Cingular. I would be using the new BIS data plan.

My needs are basically e-mail, PDA functions, and web access.

Thanks, and excuse if this has been covered before, but I searched and was unable to find this issue.

Just switched to the $29.99 BIS plan this afternoon. This switch is quite interesting and I thought I would share it here.
I went to a nearby Cingular corporate store and asked to switch to the cheaper $29.99 un-limited Blackberry plan. The buy told me that there is a $29.99 plan but it's not un-limited. I asked him if he was sure and he pulled out a brochure and showed me what he was talking about. However, that was a PDA data plan and I told him so. He then turned around and asked other guys in the store if they have heard of any $29.99 Blackberry plan. Those people answered with a "no" rather quickly. He then refered to that brochure he showed me and point out that there is no $29.99 plan. He then suggested me to go online and check for myself.
I felt a little discouraged, I then went to a master-agent Cingular store and this 2nd store did find the $29.99 plan but told me that since I have it less than 6 months I cannot change it.
Finally I came home and called the 800-304-3044 number and talked to someone in customer service. And she told me that yes she can added for me and there is no such thing as "six months" limitation. While switching my $29.99 plan, she told me that she thought that these $49.99 BIS should have been automatically switched to the cheaper $29.99 plan. Very interesting but this is the first time I heard about it. In the previous posting in this thread I read that one has to call to switch???
I ended up calling the 800 number the second time because my Blackberry brower (and thus Google Local) was not working after the switch. I waited through the hold and got someone to turn that on for me.
Very interesting experience I encountered today...

Just thought I'd relate my experience, as well.
I've had my Blackberry about five weeks. So, I had to get the original $44.99 plan (since I have a $59.99+$9.99 AAP). I had heard rumors of this price drop before I signed up, so I didn't stress too much.
Once the price drop was confirmed, I decided to wait until the end of my billing cycle (June 21) to make the change.
First, I called 611. I was told by the rep she'd have to transfer me. Suddenly I get the dial tone. So, then I called the BB 800 support number. The wait times were crazy. I had read on the forums here that the online live tech support chat was a fairly expedient method.
I hopped on there, got registered, and after 10 minutes in the chat, I was told the change had been made. It showed up on OLAM within about two hours.
I rebooted my BB about 24 hours later. The BES activation icon disappeared. Yay! Then my e-mail stopped coming to my BB. No worries. I figured something weird happened when the price point was changed. I was chained to my desk Thursday and Friday, so I wasn't missing e-mail.
Yesterday afternoon, I called BB support. About 16 minute wait. 10 minute phone convo and I thought it was fixed. But, I couldn't log into the web client (this was also an issue that had gone on all day Thursday and Friday).

So, back on to the tech support chat on Cingular's site. I had to wait about 15 minutes to talk to a rep, but he solved the problem within about 5 minutes. Now my e-mail is coming to my BB again. Yay! And now I'm paying $15 a month less. Double Yay!

That's my experience. I thought it was a bit different than what other folks have gone through since the price point change was implemented.

Thanks for the tip. This issue is particularly associated with rate plan switch so Cingular has to "flip the switch" and in my un-educated opinion, it is not something that I can resolve by doing stuff on my own...
