Default Broken 7100

I have a 7100 which is flashing red twice at a 1 second interval, and then twice on a half second interval. It doesn't respond to the power switch or the AppLoader, has no PIN when attached to a BES via USB (but IS detected!) and is generally fubar.

Please don't tell me to send this back to RIM - I know this is the official response to this red flashing, but they want 85 ($140?) to repair it because the warranty ran out. This is a company phone, and my company have no interest in paying 85 for repairs when a new device is 120!!

However, I know RIM can fix these devices, as I've had a couple fixed before (this is the result of a BES crashing halfway through the AppLoader, in case you're wondering!!). So there must be a way to fix it! As I said, the handset belongs to my company, and I have my own PDA already, I am only interested in fixing this from a hobbyist point of view. Yes, I know, I need to get out more...

Does anybody have any ideas where to start with this? Is there a lower level way of running a nuke / AppLoader, other than using the BES? A way to nuke the device without using a USB cable?

Anything you even think might be helpful will be appreciated. Any unrelated comments, such as the weather in Turkmenistan or the density of tulips on Mars will not be appreciated. Unless they happen to be interesting.
