Yes, it has been removed as part of OS v4.1
No way yet to get it back.

However...

Press and hold the Green phone button and it will do the same thing...

I just tried this with 8700/4.1.0.286, selected a contact using the Dial By Name drill down in the addres book, opened the menu, selected Call contact and it opened the Phone App with Calling indicated and the call went through. Is this version specific or what? I know Dialing by Name has the solution you mention, I have referenced it many times, but I haven't run into what the OP identified.

Curious

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

It's still there. From almost any app, HOLD the green call button and start typing a name. Then press the call button when your desired name appears…

not on mine...soon as i touch any button (letters are ignored) it jumps
up to the number entry/dial number in the top portion of the phone
screen...SUX, i used to (on my 7290) type "dad" in the lower portion
of the "phone" function and it would come up dial dad...mobile, home, work
etc and i just selected the number i wanted and hit return to start
dialing that number

yeah im not color blind...i know which one is the GREEN button...
i touch it and it takes me to the phone "feature" (or is it function)...
i type "d a d" and on the 1st "d" it IMMEDIATLY jumps to the top 1/2 (or
is it portion) of the "dial section" of the phone and show 5*5...it
does NOT prompt me for which "dad" number (mobile, work or cell) like
my 7290 did

Press and HOLD the green button. Pressing it takes you to the phone log. Press and hold the button takes you to the address book.

Actually I did say "and hold" (see the second entry in this thread) but it is not important since it works
