Default What does this icon mean

I have a friend who just started having problems with his 8700C yesterday. He ran his battery out by forgetting to plug it in to charge Thursday night. It was dead when he picked it up Friday but there is an icon on the center of the screen that looks like a battery with a red line through it.

He charged it for over 11 hours last night but it still just has the battery with the red slash icon. I traded batteries with him and his worked on my 8700 but mine provided the same battery/ icon on his.

Any idea on what to do?

From what I've read on the net and on the blackberry site, it means that the handheld isn't recognizing the battery. Here is summary of the article on the BB site.

Problem
After the battery has been charged, the Battery icon is red with a question mark beside it.

Summary of Causes

This issue can be caused by the following reasons:

An incompatible battery is in the handheld.
The handheld software does not recognize the battery.

Cause 1
An incompatible battery is in the handheld.

Resolution
Use the correct battery type.

Insert the proper type of battery. Please see the product documentation for information about the battery.
Reset the handheld. Please see Support Knowledge Base article KB-02141 for more information.

Cause 2
The handheld software does not recognize the battery.

Resolution
Run Application Loader and reload the handheld software. Please Support Knowledge Base article KB-03621 for more information about Application Loader.

Agreed. It's time for him to wipe his 8700 and reload the OS.

Thanks for the quick and complete response. I think I'm going to learn how to reload a 8700.

I've tried to reload the version 4.1 software but it does not complete. I have the latest desktop manager software and the correct software for a 8700c device. The icon with a battery with a red slash through it is still on the screen of the device. I can't get to anything else so that I can use one of the other methods to wipe the bb.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

could be a warranty job at this point, if you are sure you are doing the reload correctly, bring it to a cingular store and have a tech look at it. You would be advised to tell them that you called customer service already and they told you to reload the OS, sometimes the uninformed techs in the store will tell you that doing so will void your warranty, which it will NOT, just a bit of advice...
