Default E-mail attachment problem

Please Login to Remove!

Ixxx8217;ve noticed in the last couple of weeks I canxxx8217;t open attachments (pictures) on my 7100i that are sent to my BIS account. I used to be able to highlight the file name, click the track wheel and select open attachment. No I canxxx8217;t highlight the word Attachment and there are no options on my track wheel menu.

I did notice that at the bottom of the mail it now says winmail.dat . Yesterday Nexthell had me remove all the e-mail addresses from my service books and they resent all my accounts to me. When that did nothing they told me it was due to a large system outage. They say the next step is to delete my BIS account and start from scratch with a new user name.

Very weird! When a file has a name of winmail.dat, it normally means the system does not know the 'real' extension of the file. Is this a test document you sent to yourself? If not, try sending a Word document or something...

Yes, this was a test, just a small JPG file I sent to my BB which I have always been able to open. I just tried it agian and this is what I got:

Blue line under the address fields, on the next line is says [1 Attachment] and at the very bottom of the e-mail there is a blue line and below that it says application: winmail.dat (33K)

Update - It has to be something in my mail program (Outlook) because I did the same test using my g-mail account from the web and was able to open the attachments with no problem.

Try the application loader, and make sure the option for 'attachment' is installed...

Upadte #2 - It has to be in my e-mail client. Like I said before I tried the same test from my g-mail account using their web site and got the attachment. I tried the test again using my ISP's web page to send the e-mail with the attachment and was able to open it. So it has to be something in Outlook.

OK, so who is the MS Outlook geek here?

Is it Outlook 2003? If yes, check the settings in SECURITY (Tools / Options / Security), in particular the download section...

When using your G-Mail and your ISP's account, are you doing this through Outlook? If yes, and since we know it works, then that would say the issue is with your account/service with Nextel, no? Almost like a sort of process of elimination...

I used g-mail using their website to send the message and it worked. I used my ISP first using Outlook 2003 and it didn't work, then I tried it using my ISP's web based e-mail (their website) and it worked so I would have to say it is someplace in the Outlook settings.

Ok, so, back to my original thing, did you turn off EVERYTHING in the security part of the Outlook options? Just as a test...

...alternatively, if you're at work, it could be a setting on the server side causing this...

Wait, hold the phone! You're not using Zone Alarm or something like that are you? That has certain blocks for Outlook/Attachments...

  1. Nothing is checked on Security tab
  2. I am not on a server. I am working on my home machine
  3. I have only Norton running for security

After spending the morning doing some test I have concluded that it has to be the way Outlook is sending attachments to Nextel. I sent an e-mail with a picture attached from Outlook to my g-mail account and opened it using the g-mail website and saw the attachment no problem
