I have intermittent problems with images (mostly JPGs) attached to emails and was wondering if there was a solution or workaround:

When I get the attachment, it seems to download the attachment and registers it with a checkmark (completed). When the image displays, it will only show 1/4 to 1/3 of the image (top portion), with the rest of the image all grey. No error of any sort is received.

Further, I can't seem to (or don't know how to) tell the BlackBerry to re-download the attached image.

Anyone experiencing this problem and know of a solution?

I have the stock T-Mo OS and have already re-sent service books to no avail. This happens intermittently in both strong and weak EDGE service areas.

I've yet to be able to completely open any .jpg attachment, large or small. I normally get several a week, and all I can see is, at most, the first 20 percent of the image. In order to see it completely, I have to go to my office and receive the email in Outlook, the usual way. Kinda defeats the purpose of mobile email.

I wonder if this is an issue at the RIM server side, or a handheld issue...?

What is the file size of the image that you are having trouble with....could that be an issue if it is too large to open the entire thing??? I know when I am making ringtones there is a file size limit.....could be one for image attachments too. Try sending some test images of different sizes....or you can email the picture to me and if I can open it, there isn't a problem with the size....

We've already experimented with a variety of image sizes, all the way down to little ones only 10K in size. None of them open completely. It's exactly the way that the first post in this thread described it.

I phoned Cingular(aka ATT) and they told me I could not expect to open attachments because BB is intended as a text service. I guess that's OK, because that's why we went for it, in the first place. Though we were led to believe that it did have better functionality than that, when we investigated the system.

From searching on other BB forums, I see that this problem is not all that uncommon.

The text email functionality is great and it will be OK for us. When our contract runs out, we will investigate what other services are available, at that time.

Are you selecting "Full Image" after opening the attachment? Also, which version of the handheld code are you running?

Yes, I do select "Full Image" and also "Download More". And I am normally in very good signal strength range, so it isn't a matter of the download timing out.

I am running the most current ATT version code:
4.2.1.79

The .jpg's aren't the only attachments which have proved useless. .pdf's also arrive in such low resolutions as to be useless, even when zoomed.

When we took all this up with Cingular/ATT, later, they said that they only guaranteed that these attachments would "open", and not that they would actually be useful, once "opened". So, we learned a lesson that the pre-purchase sales are rather like listening to politicians and used car salesmen: it's what they don't tell you that matters more than what they do tell you!

We could have certainly returned the BB and cancelled the service, during the 30 day buyer's remorse period. But we still feel like the text email service is the best available at the present time, so we have kept on, with no regrets. We're a very small business, and the BB(and this forum) has been a great help to us. Even without the attachment functionality, we are ahead of the game.
