I just opened my BB 8700g. Got it out, set it up.. all good. Right? Wrong.


When I select turn wireless on, it displays the GPRS logo in the top section for about 5 seconds, then switches to the EDGE logo. After about 5 seconds, the EDGE logo dissapears. My Service bar to the right of that is almost completly full.

If I place a call while either of the two is on the screen, it works just fine. If I wait for the EDGE logo to dissapear, it gives me a call failed message when I try to make a call.

I've been sitting on hold with T-mobile FOR EVER.


my Signal is -79 dBm in the status menu.


All of my other T-mobile phones work perfectly at this location.


I do not yet have data service for it- it is voice only. Still though, it will not let me place calls.


Any thoughts?

How's your battery strength, did you charge it out of the box? Sounds like the radio is turning off. And without a data plan how do you get EDGE/GPRS at all. Maybe edge/gprs, but I didn't think you could get Caps.

no, there are no caps.

I charged it a little... it is around 80%. I tried it from several different locations throughout the city. Still, same deal.

When the edge/gprs indicators disappear, what is left? GSM or X? I think you are going to have to wait for your CSR to help you on this one.

Neither- it is blank. Thats why Im not able to make any calls.

If you don't have a data plan, it usually says "Data Connection Refused".

I'm beginning to think you have a defective device.

Check that your plan is setup properly with customer service.

If so then you most likely have a defective device. I've had 4 different 8700's (due to defects) and I have never seen your problem on any of them.

If you're not able to make any calls, that's already not a data issue. Is this a new SIM card? Sometimes, if you pull out the SIM card from under the battery and wipe down the gold part with your shirt and replace it, problems mysteriously get fixed. Definitely give Customer Service a ring to see whether they can check out your profile.

I spoke to Customer service... after a long debacle, it has been taken care of.


New SIM + reset on the network took care of it.

I am having the same problem. Bought my blackberry a week ago, and after the first time I connected it to my computer, the EDGE/GPRS logo disappeared and therefore the email push and internet browsing functions also stopped. This lasted 4 and a half days while the TIM people (I am in Italy using the TIM carrier on their first month email + internet free package) told me my phone was fine.

Finally turning off the phone for 12 hours seemed to fix it. (already tried battery pulls).

Yesterday I connected it to my PC again and the same thing happened. No EDGE/GPRS, no email, no internet. Switched the blackberry off overnight with battery pull and this time it did nothing.

Is this a common problem? Is there and easy fix for this or is it to do with the carrier? I have a pearl by the way.

In my case that happens when I start to surf web by Opera Mini. Very strange
