Smile 8700c / how to completely uninstall an app leaving no trace

Please Login to Remove!

OK, so I'm a total newbie to the world of the BlackBerry 8700c that I just got. Of course, I have searched this forum extensively prior to posting this message. It seems as though there are messages all over the place saying that this topic has "already been covered", but I never find the original thread, so I'm going to ask at the risk of getting bashed:

How do you completely uninstall an app, from the 8700c, without leaving any trace of prior configurations or "leftover files"?

Here's the scoop:

1. I bought, and registered IM+.

2. In trying to figure out the setup, I installed and uninstalled both the REGULAR and WAP versions of IM+ to my blackberry, using the windows desktop installer, perhaps 6 times before I finally figured out the proper way to configure TCP for the blackberry.

3. Now that I've got TCP configured properly (other apps are responding to it just fine), I reinstalled IM+ (regular version) to my blackberry.

4. When I launch IM+, all I get is the IM+ welcome screen. Then, the blackberry becomes totally unresponsive. The little green light on top keeps flashing, but the blackberry remains totally stuck on the IM+ welcome screen. If I do the three-key reset, the blackberry will indeed reset, but it comes back on with a totally white screen. The system will not go beyond the totally white screen.

5. The only way to get the blackberry back to life is to connect it to the USB cable, invoke the desktop software, and uninstall IM+. At which point the blackberry goes back to operating normally.

6. I have repeated steps 3 through 5 above, perhaps three times, all with the same result.

So, before I totally wipe my system and reinstall the O.S., I must ask: Is there any way to "completely" uninstall IM+, so I may do a fresh install, erasing whatever leftover configuration is on my blackberry .... obviously, something has been messed up.

I apologize for not resolving this question through "search"...I have been searching for over a day on this message board before doing this post, I promise I have invested minimum 4-5 hours trying to resolve this prior to posting....I would like to be a good citizen here. and of course thanks in advance for any replies.

I did that, and after reinstalling, my blackberry still freezes when I launch IM+. That was my original reason for doing this post...it seems like IM+ is not completely uninstalling; it seems as though there are some configuration or other files being left over somewhere. Short of wiping my entire blackberry and reinstalling the OS, does anyone have any better reccomendations?

Backup data and wipe. That is the easiest way to clean this up at this point.

I had a problem deleting Y!Messenger.....Icon was still on home screen after following the proper delete steps of (Options-->Advanced Options-->Applications-->Delete). I had searched BB forums and one thread recommended checking your Modules......I found a modules still existing with the name yahoo messenger and I deleted and rebooted my BB and it worked. Removed Y!Messenger completely from BB.

Check and see if it's still listed in modules.

no, for the following reasons:

(1) afraid to wipe my 8700c for fear I won't be able to get it working again after wiping;

(2) afraid to ask anyone on this board how to wipe/reinstall properly for fear I'll get clobbered with 'USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!' flames (I've searched and still don't see any clear, concise instructions on how to do this, start to finish, for the 8700c), so...

for the moment, I am stuck with a copy of IM+ I bought for $50 and can't use. Oh well.

Default Problem is IM+

This is a known problem with V4.0.4, see post under Aftermarket software, fix should be out tomorrow, there is nothing wrong with your unit, it is IM+

You might want to try deleting the preferences. Go to Applications/Modules then scroll down to the said app and delete. After a soft reset, this should wipe any remnants clean.

Nope, I tried this (app/delete) right now, and still the same problem. No matter how I delete it, through the App loader or via the bb itself, when I reinstall IM+, it still totally hangs my system. Obviously, "something" is being left over in terms of config files that tells IM+ it had been installed before.

This is a bummer, I bought the registered version weeks ago and I still can't use it due to this install problem..IM+ just sends me worthless canned responses to my emails.

So you deleted the "IM+ preferences" in the Modules section.. and did a soft reset after ?

It sounds like the problem is the App, not the BB, and that it is a known problem.

That being said, to wipe your handheld, go int to app loader, deselect anything you don't want on your handheld, then select next. Then select advanced. Click on the second option on this page to erase all applications. Then on the next page either backup or don't, depending on how clean you want the handheld.

Then wait for a while while it does everything you told it to. DO NOT disconnect the handheld until it tells you it is OK to do so. DO NOT worry if it takes a long time. It will take a while, and you might be inclined to think something is wrong, but it almost certainly isn't. Just be patient, and let it finish. When you are done, only the applications you selected, and whatever you backed up will be on the handheld. You will probably want to re-register the handheld and re-send the service books at that point, and you should have a fresh BB.

5. The only way to get the blackberry back to life is to connect it to the USB cable, invoke the desktop software, and uninstall IM+. At which point the blackberry goes back to operating normally.

At this point don't uninstall IM+. Try this
1.Power down device.
2.Take out the battery and wait for a few secs.
3.Powerup Device however keep wireless off
4.Start IM+ and configue IM+
5.Once above is done start wireless and disconnect device from USB

Only bad part is everytime you power of Device you will need to do this again.
Still waiting for response from IM+. However veriChat is a much better client.

Well this works for me untill I find a better solution !!!!!!
