Default Used 8700c - Need Password

Please Login to Remove!

I purchased a used 8700c off of ebay. (Background info: I am 18 months into a 2 year contract and want the BB for work but didn't want to pay +$450 to upgrade from my SE 500.) I received the BB yesterday but it asks for a password when I try to switch SIM cards from my old phone to the 8700. I've e-mailed the seller but haven't heard back as of yet. The BB still has his name & phone on the start-up screen so I've even called that number but haven't made contact yet. Reading online I see that entering the incorrect password 10 times will wipe the phone. Can I take that route and then reinstall the OS? I've read conflicting info and don't want to screw up my "new" phone.

Thanks, Bryan

It does a security wipe. The OS won't be deleted. Just any pertinent info like the address book and settings and messages. You can safely do that since you probably don't need his stuff.

Thanks for the quick response. Doing a complete wipe seemed like a good thing to me since you are correct and I don't need any of his info on the phone.

Well, this has not gone as I had hoped! I did the 10 incorrect passwords and it did the wipe. Now I have an icon and "507" displayed on the screen. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The entire OS was removed. 507 is a No Operating System found. There is loads of threads on how to reload an OS, but here's the short form:

1 - Download the latest version of the 8700 OS from your carrier. If you want to use a version from a different carrier, feel free. There is a Sticky Thread FAQ with all the download locations at the top of the General BlackBerry Discussion forum.

2 - Execute the program you just downloaded

3 - Locate and delete VENDOR.XML from your computer's hard drive (not on the BB)

4 - Restart Desktop Manager and it will load the OS to the BB.

Now I've downloaded the latest OS & software from the RIM website and used the Application Loader to put it on the 8700. Now it is working! Thanks for your help, NJBlackBerry!
