Question Weirdo perplexing error...please don't make me reload OS!!!

Please Login to Remove!

Okay, yesterday, on my 7130e from Sprint, I got an error as I was trying to check my email. I tried to open one of the emails, the messages folder closed and the following error popped up:

Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullpointerException

I removed battery for 30 sec, rebooted and as BB came back up this message popped up:

Uncaught exception: java.lang.arrayIndexOutofBoundsException

I called Sprint Blackberry Support whom resent some Service Books, had me Reprovision, and then had me do a hard reset (after a Backup of course). This changed nothing. Then they told me I needed to reload OS and asked me to open the Desktop Manager without the phone connected. Then on screen where it shows the COM1 and COM2 had me connect phone, USB recognized...clicked next. Told me I would need to select at least one program in the listing of programs that should have followed...there were none...it basically told me I would need to contact my customer support provider and that there was no software (hahaha...right). When I told her this she told me I was going to have to take the phone to a Sprint store and have them do it...reload/repair it for me.

Here are my issues with the person I spoke with and why I am checking with the much knowing people here first....

1. When I got on phone with her she asked me if I was using Outlook to check my email....!!!!
2. She had never heard of, nor could find, either one of these errors in their database.

Therefore, their response seems more cookie cutter and may or may not be required to fix my problem. Actually, I was on the phone with one other person before her who "magically" got disconnected after a few minutes of silence looking up things for me to do for the problem...I was on a landline, they are on a landline...I didn't hit the hangup button...therefore...hmm...what a great way to not have to deal with a more complex problem..."accidentally" hang up on someone. This surely wasn't the first time I had an "accidental" hang up with the wonderful people over at Sprint.

So, if the wonderful people of BlackBerryForums have an idea on what could fix this I would appreciate it. I just hope not to have to go through a complete US reload, but maybe that is what has to happen.

p.s. I did do a search on these errors prior to posting...found a few hits on the NullPointerException error and none on the other. The few on the one I found were posted by people with 7100i and such. Results seemed to run around upgrading the firmware or redoing the OS. My phone, being a 7130e from Sprint doesn't currently have an update for the firmware. My phone is currently running v4.1.0.318 (Platform 2.2.0.127). Thanks everyone!!!

Any third party apps running?

BTW - 99% likely that you will have to reload the OS.

Wirelessly posted (Cingular 7130c: BlackBerry7130/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Relosing the OS isn't difficult, and as long as you have a backup there's nothing to worry about.

The only 3rd part apps I have are Yahoo, Berry 411, a few games, and BBToday. BBToday, Berry 411 and several new Themes were added to my Blackberry a few days before this error started to occur.

Also, if I do end up having to reload the OS should I do it with the Sprint OS or another...that is the other thing I noticed in doing a search for this problem was that one guy that had the NullpointerException error was recommended to install the Cingular OS on his 7100i (don't know who his original carrier was though). So, if there is one that is known to be more stable than Sprints that would be great as Sprint hasn't released the firmware upgrade yet and I still have other problems with my Blackberry that they can't seem to address....like the fact that 50% of the time I have to reboot my phone before I can tether through the PCS Connection Manager because it doesn't recognize that my phone is connected to the USB unless I reboot. As said, it only does this about 50% of the time and the Destop Manager always sees it as connected...just the connection manager doesn't 1/2 the time.

Use the OS from the carrier, as its possible that the handheld software is somewhat tweaked to that carrier's data network. If it still has problems after reloading the OS ask for a warranty replacement

The reason you did not see any apps is that you have not installed the OS from your provider. Please get the OS from your provider, install it. It will "plug" into your Desktop Manager. Problem 1 fixed.

Problem 2, your Java exceptions. Your OS is corrupted.
FIrst download JL_CMDR from this forum and use option 5 to wipe your Blackberry (unless you are made of time, because using the DM is a 20 minute process to delete the unit and unless you do it exactally correctly you can still leave vestiges of the old OS on the unit, negating all your efforts).
Second, load the OS using the DM
Third, load your backup.
YOu will not have the extra apps you added, but out of all your apps I really only recommend using berry 411. I found BBToday will cause errors, and themes are just, well, silly when you have a problelm. I mean, yeah your unit might look pretty, but you have to look around the java exception to see that sweet background.
If this fixes the unit, wait 2 weeks and load the themes you want one at a time to see if any of them are causing the exception.

I didn't mean to seem snarky about themes, I have authored some myself for fun and for my company. It is just, when you have a problem, you should change one thing at a time. I have never seen a problem with berry411, have seen several exceptions from BBToday, and the themes just add to the confusion.

So, not snarky, just nerdy.

The funny thing about me not seeing the apps in DM was that I did have the OS from provider installed...and running fine up until I started having those Java exceptions. I ended up downloading the OS/firmware from BB's site, installing it on the desktop, connecting to DM and then all of the programs showed up in DM...then I was able to do the install to the blackberry through App Loader in DM and it worked flawlessly...took about 15min.

As far as BBToday and some of the other 3rd party apps...I see your point. I intended to get rid of BBToday anyhow as it doesn't work right and scrunches the email address on the screen and is not modifiable enough for my tastes anyhow.

Everything that was on my BB before the reload stayed unless I unchecked the box for it in the App Loader on DM, didn't lose anything that I didn't want to and the errors are gone...hooray!

BTW...I took no offense of any kind towards your statements about themes and such...point taken, but as they were left on after the reload I won't mess with the themes or any of the programs unless I see another error come up...but BBToday is history!!!

I hate it when people are right on things like this NJ , but gosh darn it...even though I realized I may have to reload it I didn't want to. Thanks for all the help you and everyone else provides through BBForums.

Now, I did try to run the Cingular OS on there as it has a newer version number than Sprint. I downloaded the file from BB's site, installed it, DM was closed, deleted Vendor.xlm file, opened DM, connected BB, no programs showing in DM...it didn't recognize the update sitting there...why???

Upon installing the Sprint one overtop of this it worked fine, programs showed up in DM and everything....????
