Default Data connection refused: 8707v in Japan

Please Login to Remove!

Hello BB experts,
I am very new to BB device and having some troubles.
I am using unlocked 8707v and inserted my Vodafone JP(now called Softbank mobile) SIM card. I can make a call but I cannot get rid of "data connection refused" message. I cannot use browser/email.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens?
I am also wondering why Network coverage icon is 3G. It should be "3G==".
Any input is appreciated.
Regards,
totoro777

You need a BlackBerry data plan on the SIM card you are using.

sometimes I get the "data refused" message also. I go into network and go to manual and select a different provider. I also have a 8707v. In Japan Ntt docomo, i believe is the one that works, IF you have a BB account as Jax said. If you do have an account, just rotate through the different provider's. It will work.

Hello.

I have been working in Japan for 3 years now.

I have a Japanese 3G sim-card in a Japanese branded 3G mobile phone.
Pre-Softbank, and this Japanese phone not a BB device. Just a plain 3G mobile phone.

I have just ordered a 8707v from the UK, which is being sent to me in Japan.
This will have a UK Sim-card (UK 3G USIM card???)

Obviously, I can keep the UK sim card in the UK 8707v and let it roam on (this is my first question, whom will it roam to? (NTTDocomo or Softbank)).
a Japanese network.

What I would like to do is, place my Japanese Vodafone 3G sim card into the UK Vodafone 8707v BB, and then use my BB on the Japanese network.
Second Question: Can I do that? Would it work?

Then, I'd like to place the UK Vodafone sim card into my Japanese Vodafone 3G mobile (NOT at BB device), and use that (Japanese) mobile for UK calls and SMS messages.
Third question, would that be possible?

I accept that my third question is not BB related, and beyond the remit of this forum. So, is only a polite request.

This my first time I will have ever used a BB. The 8707v will arrive next week, or the week after. So as of yet, I never even touched a BB.

My company has a Blackberry server and I will be requesting adding my BB to the server.

Some more slightly Japan unrelated (newbie) questions.

If I leave my 8707v with the UK sim card, roaming in Japan, to whomever.
With an assumption that I will just have an occasional incoming call and SMS from the UK. No Web usage. If I have full BB corporate mail functionality, Will my roaming BB incur massive roaming UK charges, as it looks to the UK to get it's email data?

One more for now. Anything I need to traffic-wise / call-plan , both in the UK and Japan?

Default BB Japan

Hayden San,

First of all, leave your Japanese phone and sim card alone. Japan, even if you can get a BB plan, charges from last I checked per kb which adds up quick.

Find out if the 8707v coming from the UK has a BB International plan. It has to have this. No plan, no BB. You can manually pick the company for service in Japan but I've found letting it bounce around from Softbank (vodaphone) and DoCoMo is not a problem.

I think the biggest problem you have is finding a company to provide a unlimited international BB plan for a fair price. Check out the forum and you'll find something. I'm sure you've found with softbank that they charge almost 100 yen for a sms. I just re-trained everyone to send me a e-mail or use the instant messaging on the BB.

Hello Stew-san,

My 8707v BB is now working flawlessly. I would just like to detail what I did, and how your advice was invaluable (Thank you, very much).

I unlocked the device using UnlockItNow.com which was also worked without problem.
In hindsight unlocking the device was unnecessary, however maybe in the future having an unlocked BB will be useful.

I spoke to Softbank Japan, and didnít know what BlackBerry data plan was, and since they donít sell BlackBerry, I was not surprised by their answer.

I then called DoCoMo, and they DO have a BlackBerry Data plan. They even sell their own version of a BlackBerry, the 8707h (no Japanese input, only English) which they will only sell to corporate clients. You can, however get a DoCoMo sim-card only with a BB data plan, however itís not very economical. They want an Initial one-time membership which costs 5,985 yen (US$50), and then a monthly charge of 5,700 yen (US$48).

So I called Vodafone UK, and a International BB data usage is only 10.23 UK pounds per 1 Megabyte ($5/1Mb), if I donít use the browser, (I donít need to use the browser, I have a notebook with a wireless AirEdge card).

Vodafone UK, does have an Unlimited International Data plan, but itís 90 UK pounds a month ($180ish). Iíll wait and see how much data I truly use before subscribing to that plan.

In short, I am keeping the UK BB 8707v with my UK sim-card, roaming on Vodafone JP.

My own investigations came back with exactly the same as your recommends as being the best and most efficient way to operate a BB in Japan. I am sure that your comments before, and mine today will be useful to some one else in the future.

I am confused by your comments about Softbank SMS charges. My BB is roaming with Softbank (it says Vodafone JP on the screen, but we know itís Softbank), I get charged the international SMS rate from Vodafone UK, whenever I send an SMS. How does the Softbank 100yen/SMS charge affect me? Have I have missed something crucial in my thinking? .

Many thanks for your support.

Hayden.

Softbank (Vodaphone) will charge you, unless they have changed their policy, 100 yen for using your phone, not BB since you're using your UK sim, to send an sms to a overseas number. I haven't used it for awhile so it might have changed.
