Nope, wireless has to be turned on. If you only have a voice plan your device is going to constantly try to connect to the data network and your battery life will suffer. If you only want a cell phone then this BlackBerry is not for you.

Hey! I just contacted Cingular, and I wa told is my display was showing "gprs" in lowercase, then I was not getting charged for my data transfer, which was include using the Internet or getting E-mails. When it shows "GPRS" in uppercase then you are using the full data transfer service. Thus, I am just using the Gprs link to connect to thier voice data service and am not being charged for it. I has the lady also check if I had been charged for anything extra, and she said I had not been charged for any extra data transfer, and I have been using the phone for about 3 days now. So next time you answer a question, please et your information right.

dfisher's response to you was correct-- the only way you are going to be able to make calls is to have the radio turned on. you will not have data services on your phone, just calling, with a data plan.

And like you stated, if you know you are NOT using data, and you aren't being charged for NOT using data, I really don't know what the question is you atttempted to ask.

And like dfisher said, why have the BB if you are using data? You have a nice high-priced cell phone. Like buying you a high-priced call girl and only holding hands.

Maybe I didn't pay for the phone...

It's a 7730 model, that was given to me.

And the same answer applies to your question then, whether it was purchased or given to you.

I'm sure Cingular and your BB could not care how you obtained it.

Good luck.
