Default 8700 Cingular on a prepaid account

I have a buddy that just bought a 8700 cingular version on a prepaid account. He keeps getting data connection refused on it? Does anyone know why this would come up. Also, he can receive calls but when he answers, he can only hear the other caller on speaker phone and the other person can't hear him? This is very weird, anyone???

Two things: without a blackBerry Data Plan all you will have is voice and SMS. No data. No Internet. No E-Mail. He must have a BlackBerry Data Plan, which is normally nor offered on prepaid plans.

Second - if the other person can't hear him, he may have a bad phone. Let me guess - bought on eBay...

Yeah, he bought it off ebay. The seller did say he will take it back and give him his money back. Is this no voice thing a common problem?
