Lightbulb OS 4.2 for 8700c, when?

Please Login to Remove!

I've got a hunch that cingular will launch the new os for the 8700 around the time when they release the Pearl. Here's why: the Pearl supposedly will have push-to-talk enabled, but for it to work on the 8700 I imagine they need to update the software. The 8100 release is the perfect time to do that.

What do you guys think? Anybody have some info on this?

I think you may be right. I was also wondering if they would start selling 8700's in stores that come with OS 4.2 once it is released. I guess we just have to wait and see. Obviously people will post any news on the new OS.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/135)

I have heard various timelines for the 4.2 release. I cannot wait any longer for the new functionality. Some ppl are saying Q1 of '07....I'm hoping its well before the end of the year.

I would think it's gotta be sometime soon, unless they skip upgrading the 8700's all together being the 8800's are coming down the pike, but I hope not. I still have my old one in the drawer.

There won't be a "skip" in the upgrading of the 8700 series. 4.2 is currently in beta, and should be released before the end of the year. But it remains to be seen as to when.

Cool! I know this will make a lot of 8700 users happy!

Man, I'm a upgrade freak! I've got to have the latest and greatest on my phone. I've been waiting for the next big upgrade since I bought the phone last year! I wish they would stop wasting time and release the freaking software already!

I could really care less if it was buggy or something, at least we would have it to play with it. There's nothing wrong with patches later on.

GIVE ME 4.2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 4.2 code I've used on the 8700 before was very buggy (although it was a very early beta). RIM should roll out a release version to a couple of carriers before the end of the year. The problem with these types of delays tend to be down to the carriers who nearly always insist on approving software before general release. Vodafone for example might well be testing 4.2 for the 8700, but they could well have 20, 30, 40 other phones from other manufacturers which they also need to approve so it can take time.

I'm sure Verizon will be the last one to get OS 4.2 for the 8703e, since they always are. They'll strip out all the good new features too, since they always do ( :cough: MMS :cough: )

This is stupid. Stop making us wait. I want something new, and if RIM doesn't provide me with my new-tech kicks, I'll go somewhere else.

I'd buy the pearl but it's only available for lame t-Mobile.

This is so retarded of them. And I don't mean that in a derogatory way of calling them mentally challenged, instead I mean it's very counter intuitive. Against the flow of logic.

What I this is the stupidest part of this whole deal is: why the heck do we want our carriers distributing software to us in the first place!!!!!!!!! What do they care about us for? As long as we pay our bills on time, they have no incentive to update our devices! Why isn't RIM personally giving me the updates? Screw having Cingular approve! Clearly the OS works, why then must we wait for Cingular to decide weather or not they like it!

So Stupid.

What else is stupid is that everyday I check to see if maybe they've updated the software, and that I can download it and play with it. But everyday is a let-down because they never have it out... Sucks.

Relax. There's a whole Rants and Raves forum here for just that kind of thing.

As BBAdmin stated, the 4.2 Beta that's been out is rediculously buggy. Like, unfunctional-buggy. Your assertion that "clearly the OS works" is hardly accurate. The level of support that would be required to field the issues associated with this version of the OS would be rediculous. I'm not surprised at all that it hasn't been released yet. There was a LOT of work to go back and do.

No more random rants, please. Take it to the proper forum if that's your only goal. Thanks.

I agree with Pizzle. To follow on from that it's the networks that have to act as a first line of support for a lot of people and therefore it must be acredited. I'd like a Ferrari, but if you offered me a test mule that was still in development and said "drive it down the motorway at 170mph", I wouldn't!!!!! The same logic applies here. Just to give you a flavour of the woes, my 4.2 beta didn't even have a working battery meter, so I had no idea of how much battery life I had!!! Do you really want that???

Well said! Good example on the Ferrari though, I wouldn't try 4.2 beta if its battery meter won't work. But to die in a Ferrari test, well, not a bad way to die to me... lol
We keep waiting though, I hope it comes out before that fancy 8800 does. I just don't need all that camera and track ball crap, not my type. Strickly Blackberry track wheel is all I need.

Thats really weird. One would not think that they were re-writing the entire operating system. But reworking a small program as trivial as the battery meter, they must be re-working the whole kit and kaboodle. I'm not sure why they would call it 4.2 then, a major re-work usually merits a new version number, and not a revision number.

You see, I was under the impression that they were simply adding new features to exsisting code.
