Default 8703e sprint with phone as modem won't connect!

Please Login to Remove!

I'm hoping the knowledgeable folks here can help. I have an open ticket with sprint on this issue but they haven't done anything but keep escalating the ticket for 5 days now.

The problem:
I have a new (week old) BB 8703e on sprint with BES. All the various BB functionality seems to work fine, I get my BES stuff properly sync'd over the air and my imaps account I setup pushes properly. I can browse the web or my intranet ok. I have the standard BB BES/MDS plan on this line through sprint.
Whenever I try to connect with the phone as modem option, I can an error 'server is not responding'. If I try to dial #777 manually through a terminal connected to the BB modem, I see the BB switch from EVDO to 1x (not 1X), say modem mode enabled, and then instantly disconnect and switch back to EVDO. The terminal just gets an instant no carrier signal, no attempt at negotiation.
I am the BES admin and I have verified that our IT policy has disable IP modem set to false.

As I've verified this issue with multiple computers and with a terminal, not just the sprint dialer and such I'm quite confident this is not a pc side issue. As recommended on other boards, I have flow control and hardware compression disabled in my modem config.

Help! Sprint is of no help so far.

Have you verified the PAM feature was added to your device?

How do I verify this? Sprint thinks (but isn't sure) my service is provisioned properly. Is there some setting on my BB I have to change for this?

Thanks, Jon

I too am a BES Admin and our company has been using the Sprint's 7130e as a modems for several months. Each time I've encountered this issue the resolution was always one of the following:
1. Sprint\Nextel sent the device to me WITHOUT enabling the EV-DO Service on the device. After they do this you will need to provision it again and reload the Connection Mgr software. I now make it a point to call their BB helpline 1st to insure it's enabled before I waste my time setting it up.
2. If the EV-DO service is actually enabled, then uninstall Sprint's CM, remove it as a MODEM from the laptops device Mgr, Rebooting (while still connected via usb), let PnP find it, Query Modem, Unplug, and then rienstall Sprint's CM.

This always resolves my 'server not responding' error. I am curious though...is your Sprint Connection Mgr detecting the device under Device Info and Diags?

#1 was exactly the problem. I called to check on my ticket just a few minutes before your post and the tech noticed that I was setup for 3G instead of EVDO. We reprovisioned the phone and it took a couple of hours before my phone functioned as a modem but I'm running it now succesfully. Speedtests on speakeasy are showing ~1.5Mb down and 150-250Kb up. Now too bad. Thanks for the help.

2. Yes, even when this didn't work, CM could probe the modem just fine.

Now to figure out how to get PAM working under linux so I don't have to fire up vmware...

Thanks!
Jon
