Default Pissed off at my 8703e

Please Login to Remove!

Last night I was sending a text message when my 8703e shut off and acted like it was re-booting. Well it would never re-load it would stay on the Verizon screen with the hourglass spinning for hours. So I left the battery out all night and I took it into the Verizon store this morning. The technician told me the liquid indicator had been activated so there was nothing he could do. The thing that pisses me off is that I treat my 8703 like gold and it was never in liquid contact. I keep it in a silicon skin case and it stays in my pocket when im not using it. So now I have to file an insurance claim, and when I did they say that they are currently out of 8703 and they will call me when they get one in. I could be weeks without my 8703... Any thoughts on why the liquid indicator would go off when I know I didn't drop it in any liquid or set it in any???

Are you in an area with adverse weather conditions? A guess could be extreme humidity, rain, even really cold weather. I would imagine that even being around a hot shower's steam could impact the handheld under the right circumstances.

I'm in Arizona, and I don't take it near the shower. It was fine all day, and then it just shut down.

Well I am sorry to say that they won't do a warranty replacement if the water sensor had tripped.... If you have insurance they will but I doubt the service provider will...

Best of luck!

I would search for "water indicator" in the forum. You will see a bunch of posts from posters claiming their indicators were tripped even though they never got the devices wet -- maybe you took the phone out of your air conditioned car and water condensed on the indicator.

I would print the posts out and bring them to the shop. Not sure that will help, but if you get on the phone with Verizon, keep complaining and asking for a manager you probably have a reasonable shot.

I would just try and fix it. Download a copy of JL_CMDR to your PC and use it to wipe the device via USB. Then use Desktop Manager to reload the OS. You'll have to download and install the latest OS first, then delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader. Once that's done, plug in the BB and start Desktop Manager. You may lose your data if you haven't done a Backup but you won't have to pay a $110 deductible for a new BB. There's probably nothing wrong with it, just glitched somehow.

I was trying to think of a way to fix it as well. I didnt think it was liquid but a glitch and when I plug it in to the computer, it does not connect to the Desktop Manager at all, it doesnt do anything while the Verizon logo is displayed and the hour glass spins. I will try that JL_CMDR procedure and see if i can get it to work.

Why do you delete the Vendor.xml file? What does that do?

Deleting it allows the Desktop Manager to load another carrier's OS on to your BB. With the vendor.xml file installed the Desktop Manager will only allow your carrier's OS to install. Any OS for the 8700 will work regardless of what carrier put it out. It's really an unnecessary file.

Edit: As long as the network system is the same, ie. GSM vs. CDMA

John Clark - Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! It was totally not a liquid problem. I reloaded the OS and it booted up as normal. Now I need to go into Verizon and have the re-activate the blackberry. I had them activate my old phone so I had a replacement until my BB came. I cannot thank you enough!!!!!

Personallly I think that is total BS.
I'd be in that store yankin the store managers chain until THEY gave me one because apparently their "Liquid sensor" is defective and I wouldn't stand for getting screwed because of it. Glad to see it worked out for ya though.

I was pretty fired up when they told me this. There is a Verizon Wireless Customer Serv. Manager in one of my classes at ASU (Go Devils) and he is going to get a piece of my mind when I see him again!!!

LOL, Like the employees give a cr^p! The world is full of people who want to act like the world should revolve around them but the cell phone people really do not care!

It is a shame because if you know the right person, then they can work wonders and cut deals or right the wrongs. I've actually had CSR reps working with me as I bid deals that they brokered with their manager (on the phone). However, it's a chance you take with each store or phone call. It entirely depends on the mood of the individual. Their hands are nowhere near as tied as they claim them to be.

It sounds like this water sensor is too sensitive to diagnose a problem. It's a shame that Verizon is using it to deny any further investigation into issues with their product. Glad you got the advice you needed here.

It's that most repairs (or request for a remplacement phone) are done externally from the store/company.

But for the repair or replacement phone to be credited to the store, the water indicator as to be ok.

So, i do sympathise and im sure that you did not drop it in water, but it's what everybody with a water damaged phone says.

And by experience, the repair/replacement external company doesnt give a rat's a$$ about the situation explained by the client. For the store, it's a policy not to accept water damaged phones since they will not be credited.

Then depending on how much business you bring to them (consumer, not so good, big company with 100+ lines, good), the manager could autorise a new phone and accept the loss of the other.

It's a shame that their arent several indicators with different strenght (humid, rainned on or dropped in the toilet would be good)
