Default Letters next to signal strength?

I have noticed on my blackberry some letters appearing directly to the left of my signal strength bar (I have a BB 7250)

They appear/disappear seemingly randomly, and I have no idea what they mean. I was hoping someone else did.

The seem to be in two groups


I've seen them capitalized or lowercase, to just add to my confusion.

Anyone know what these mean?

Those letters indicate the type and quality of signal detected by your BlackBerry.

1x - digital signal is present but is not of good quality, you will not be able to use data (and often voice) services here

1X - good quality digital signal

1XEV - EvDO signal, broadband data speeds are possible here
