What is the speaker looking thing on the back of the 8703e? Is that the speaker phone? I cannot find it in any of the manuals and/or user guides?

Yes it is the speaker. Press the Speaker/$ button (located next to the enter button) during a call and see what happens!

So the second part of my question is: If it is the speaker for the speaker phone should you lay your 8700 keys down so that the speaker is up, or Speaker down so that the keys are up?

I lay mine down so the keys are up. It's pleanty loud enough for me. The mic is below the 'alt' key so you'll almost need the keys upward.

When on speaker phone, I lay it so keys are down and speaker face up... Works like a champ for me but I am deaf in one ear and cant hear out the other and I also have the volume cranked!
