Question BES and GMail Privacy / Security? -What can my IT guys see?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

1) BES vs GMail app

I have a my own personal Verizon 8703 that my company agreed to pony up a BES license, so I can get corp email on my own device.

This was set up yesterday.

I have also set up the new GMail app that produces a separate GMail icon on my device desktop.

I am assuming the GMail icon is Web-based, as my GMail is not running through the "Messages" inbox, which is what I want (I don't want both my corp email and GMail mixing in "Messages"). This is not push email, just a faster way to access GMail from my understanding.

However, can anyone confirm that my IT guys cannot view my GMail, based on the above, even though I am on BES through my company?

2) Browser security?

What broswer security / anti-virus precautions should I take with my 8703?
Is there BB anti-virus software to keep my device safe if I use Web-based access to email accounts / general browsing?

Thanks!

I think this depends a lot on the browser you're using. When you get set up on BES, assume everything can be see in your email. I've seen threads through the forum on the BB browser and the regular Internet browser. There is a difference between the two. The BB browser goes through BES so that is definitely monitored while the reguld Internet browser may not. As for browser security, your BES should have a firewall set up so this should be fine although you should use the cautionary rules that you would with a desktop regarding identity management.

This has been asked many times....The BES logs everything. Somebody did post not too long ago that it can be difficult to track, however, the BES does log everything.

Hi,

Quick question - I found that the GMail app is called GMail for Mobile Application.

Since it created a custom icon my desktop, would I be able know if it is running through my BB Browser or the other browser?

So, if I understand correctly BB Browser configures / transmits data through my firm's BES even though this personal device's data service plan is via Verizon?

That's correct. However, a lot of people here use the GMail app to keep the personal messages out of their message list. I don't know if anyone could read the emails going to the GMail app but I'm sure they'd see that data was transmitted for it. I am not a BES admin so I'm just guessing on that one.

Gotcha.

Thanks for the clarification. I am more concerned with some guy in IT seeing
my actual personal GMail - bank notifications, credit card notifications, messages to / from family.

I doubt they will have an issue on the data transmission, as I'm paying 100% for my Verizon data service plan, unless they are paying something on the backend above and beyond the BES license they have provided. Still probably not an issue.

But, I'll definitely keep my eyes open on this!

Have a good one!
