Hey, I'm thinking about getting an 8700g unlocked, and I'm not entirely sure how the wireless works. Will it connect to my home wireless network, or does it require some kind of paid service to browse online?
Also how does the browser work? is it easy to navigate various websites? I couldn't find a demo, and I'm planning on using it quite a bit for surfing.
Thanks very much.
Welcome to BB Forums.
The 8700 does not have "WiFi", which is what would allow you to use your home network. It is more like a phone - you must have a BlackBerry Data Plan from your carrier in order to use it for data. Without a BlackBerry Data Plan all you will have is voice and SMS text. With the BlackBerry Data Plan you also get wireless e-mail (which is what the BB is really all about), Internet browsing, IM, etc.
Browsing is fairly easy. There are also third party browsers, like Opera Mini, available for the BB.
But you must have a BlackBerry Data Plan first.
Thanks very much for your help. I'm quite disappointed to hear that. I was hoping it would all sync up with my network. Are there any Blackberry devices that would do that?
Not today. In any event, future models with WiFi would still require a BlackBerry Data Plan in order to work properly. That's how RIM (and the carriers) make their money.
You can sync with your desktop but that's over a USB connection. What do you mean by "sync up with my network"?
