Desktop Software vs. Device Manager
Howdy all, new to the forums as well as BB devices... I've searched quite a bit for some very basic info about the software available from Blackberry, but can't seem to find the forest for the trees...

I have an 8703e device which will be used with my company's corporate BB Enterprise Server (Exchange), and I'm curious what the benefits of using one or the other software packages are (currently v4.2 for both "Desktop Software" and "Device Manager" packages on the web). I'll be using it basically just for email, and I've read somewhere that it might be possible to also store data on the device as well?

Welcome to the forums,
Device Manager is included with Desktop Manager. You get both with one install. Desktop Manager allows you to sync calendar, address book, memo pad, calendar, etc. and backup your device data. However, usually being on a BES does this for you wirelessly with the Enterprise Server.

Desktop Manager also allows you to load software on to your device.

Keep in mind, however, that all this hinges on whether your company's corporate IT policy will allow it. They can block any of these features as they desire.

The BB is not really a data storage device. There's just not enough memory on the 8700. The Pearl and the, soon to be out, 8800 have microSD slots and can store data.

Thanks alot for the swift reply...

Can you say what basic sort of features just the device manager brings to the table? I have in fact been told by my IT group that I don't "need" the desktop manager, but they don't disallow it... just noted that some users have reported various problems on their PC's after installing it and suggest the more basic device manager... but I'm still in the dark over just what the device manager offers as far as functionality... thanks.

If your connected to a BES server and synching everything wireless then you will not can anything from installing Desktop Manager.

There's a backup utility and the app loader. 4.2 also has the media manager and switch device wizard.
