Talking All you CDMA'ers...saw a demo unit of the 8830 today...

Hey all,

Met up with a contact that had a demo unit of what he called the 8830. It was a demo unit so it didn't have everything on it, but apparently the 8830 will be a CDMA unit for the North American market and will have an unlocked GSM radio with European bands (900MHz/1800MHz) so CDMA users can travel to Europe and pop in a SIM. The demo unit didn't have the slot for the SIM card yet, but looked like there was a section blocked off on the mainboard.

The unit had GPS, no WiFi though...no idea if it will make it on the device, I'm pretty sure my contact said it would. One of the reasons for the "CDMA World Phone" is to allow carriers like Sprint/Verizon/Bell Mobility/Telus compete on RFP's that mandate worldwide network access.

Was also told that there are no future iDEN units on the horizon (for those Sprint Nextel and Telus Mobility Mike users) due to a lack of commitment for substancial volume purchase, in this case Sprint as Telus doesn't have the subscriber base required.

Anyways back to the 8800, feels good in your hand, more substancial, kinda like the Pearl in that it feels tight and less plasticy than the 8700. Oddly though it feels larger in your hand than the 8700, even though putting the two up against each other it's obvious that the 8700 is wider and thicker! I think it has to do with the fact that the 8800 isn't as tapered as the 8700, the 8700 is more rounded on the corners and the bottom of it tapers in nicely. Keyboard was very usable, a bit stiff, though I was told this wasn't the final production keyboard and that the new keyboard is nicer to type on. I was able to type pretty quickly on this demo unit though.

Anyways hope that satisfies some of you dying to get the 8800 and gives you CDMA people some hope for a solid device. It definately makes me want to get one, though if I can't pick one up for a cheap price I'll hold off until the WiFi/GPS/Camera smaller version is out later this year.

My "New Every Two" with Verizon isn't up until May 2008, and I don't feel like paying full retail for another BB, so I'm waiting until them. Hopefully there will be a GPS/WiFi version out by then. I could care less about the camera.

Any word if the new 8830 will have EVDO Rev A? Or will we have to wait for the Crimson?

I think this is the "Cyclone" model we've been hearing about.

Number_44,

Sorry man but my 8700 doesn't have a camera else I'd gladly have taken a picture. It is an Indigo looking unit as that form factor has enough room for the CDMA/GSM radios.

No idea on release date, just that this was a beta unit and in development. I don't know how 'early' of a beta it was as my contact didn't get into many specifics and though that I'd enjoy having an 8800 in my hands to get the feel of it. I can just say that the unit was not feature complete at this point.

No idea on this either, again I didn't really get into technical specifics, I'm a GSM user so the CDMA wasn't that interesting to me other than the form factor of the 8800, screen quality, build quality/feel, etc...

Yeah my contact didn't give me any 'codenames', I know for a fact that with recent leaks from guys like the Boy Genius about the Pearl/8800 have definately raised eyebrows at RIM. I've been told from several sources that I have that device codenames are now carrier specific so that any leaks will identify the source, or at least point RIM in the right direction to finding them. Eg. Rogers Indigo is known as the Arrow and I've also heard of another device being mentioned called the 'Canuck', maybe this is the equivalent Crimson.

All in all the get together with my contact was more about catching up as I hadn't seen them in ages and they brought a cool new beta device with them to show off since they know I'm a technology junkie. I wouldn't want to press them or release information that would tie back to them in substancial way but also wanted to share this info so that you CDMA guys have something to look forward too, namely a nice 8800-Indigo unit with identical form factor to the GSM 8800 that will also give European GSM band functionality and will have the GSM portion unlocked.

Cheers
