Default Key Lock on 8800

Please Login to Remove!

Finally got my 8800 today and am loving it! The size and feel is quite different from the 8700 but I'm getting used to it. I had the Pearl and didn't quite like the way the key lock worked. Seems like it's the same on the 8800.

On the 8700, you could press the thumbwheel twice to unlock the device. Once for the menu and then again to choose Unlock.

On the 8800, when you press the pearl, it brings up the menu. But when you press it again, it doesn't accept Unlock. Looks like the only way to unlock ist to press * and then Talk.

Wonder why they've done it like this?

Have you tried the mute key on top as the lock/unlock?

ooo thanks Stinsonddog!
I missed being able to hold the asterix key and lock the keyboard.
This isn't the same keyboard lock(as in graphically) but it has the same function!
Very nice.

My 8800 has a password set, but if it is locked, I can press the pearl twice and get the password prompt. This is indeed the same as the 8700 double wheel click. Perhaps the * Talk is meant to prevent accidental unlocking as a result of being kept in a pocket.

It's a "function" (and I use that loosely) of OS 4.2.

The 4.2 betas for the 8700's, as well as the OS for the Pearl all do the same thing.

Frustrating...wish a double click of the trackball (or similar) would open it.

Nice. Thanks! So, if I'm doing it right, I press and hold the mute key to enter standby mode which essentially locks the device and then press mute again to unlock the BB?

Man I really hope a carrier releases an update to allow double trackball click to unlock the device, heck even if a letter worked that would be fantastic, I can't even press U for it to unlock from the normal alt + that I am used to. So far thats about the only thing I have to complain about, that and the fact that the vodafone today theme isn't yet available

What is the difference between standby and locked? It seems that in standby, your phone might not ring or receive email.

You are supposed to be able to click * and Send if you don't have a password set.

If you do have a password set, the hitting the Pearl and Unlock from the menu should work. However I wonder if you do you should be able to just start typing the password like I do on my 8700. What are people seeing?

The mute key just prevents accidental keypresses

I can click * then send but its just not my normal habit on the 8700 (and hence why it frustrates me on the 8800). I got very used to just moving the wheel, then clicking unlock (I don't set a password). So its just a 3 year or so habit on unlocking the blackberry with a sort of double click functionality. I really want to be able to click the trackball, then highlight unlock and click again.

Yes. Double-clicking the trackwheel was nice.

The standby solution doesn't really work for me, because it requires me to remember to do it. The screen lock when in holster is good for avoiding the 'ass dial' (hope the moderator doesn't mind that). But the one-handed double-click was also the nice way to unlock - easy to do, and could be done without looking. *+Dial is hard and awkward to do one-handed...

I'm more impressed with the 8800 than I thought I'd be, upgrading from an 8700. I haven't found a killer app yet, but it does feel simply more ... complete than the 8700 did... Bummer about this keylock thing...

I don't understand why when you click the track ball the second time (selecting the unlock option), it doesn't work like on the 8700 and actually unlock the device. I think this must be a bug.

I do however really like the standby mode. You can still receive calls and new email notifications. Seems cleaner to me somehow.

Does anyone know if standby mode uses less battery than locking the keypad?
