I would love to have someone prove me wrong, but that doesn't appear to be possible. It looks like the card is only meant to hold media files.

I believe the only way to save something on the card is through Media Manager in the Desktop software, which means that only media files (songs, movies) could be kept on there. I could be wrong, but that is what I think it is there for.

The 8800 also has internal memory for programs so it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Correct. 3rd Party apps can't be saved to SD on either device.

How about individual files like email attachments? Please don't say that the microSD is exclusively for use as a music/video player!

If the e-mail attachment is a picture, for example, yes, you can save it. You can't save doc or spreadsheets or pdfs though.

It's for media only.

Thanks.

Only asking since the Pearl has been out a while ... Any realistic likelihood that a 3rd-party utility could open this up for broader use?

Not sure...

Considering there's not even a built-in way to edit Word files, etc, I doubt saving them to anything would be first on RIM's list. Would love to see that, though.

It would be interesting to see if eOffice had any kind of functionality re: that.
