Alright I need to know the EXACT video format specifications for the 8800.

I need:

- Compatible File Types
- Compatible Frame Rates
- Compatible Video Bitrate
- Compatible imbedded Audio Bitrate (for Video)
- Imbedded Audio Suported File Types (for Video)

Also I was wondering if we can do streaming audio now, or even streaming video. Let me know.

There is a thread somewhere about video on the 8100. Just change the params to the new screen size.

I downloaded the latest mencoder and ran this command on TheDeparted.avi that I had for my XBMC to play.
D:\mplayer>mencoder -vf scale=320:-2 d:\DivX\TheDeparted.avi -o TheDeparted_8800.avi -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=320:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64

and it plays flawlessly.

So it supports... what? A specification thread about a single encoder is sort of useless to me. I need to know what file extensions the 8800 supports, what framerate, Max bitrate per different file extensions, what encoders to use.

In all actuality that MEncoder is too basic for me.

I looked for the specs on the 8100 and all I found was a how-to thread that tells how to convert using a specific program. I'm using a combination of programs including Avid, Quicktime Pro, and Final Cut.

I don't understand why there is no detailed video specifications availible on RIM's website. They say go to "blackberry8800.com" for more detailed list of supported file formats,but when I go there it's just a bunch of useless feature lists with no real specifications anywhere.

I need to know every last little nitty-gritty detail about the video playback functionality of the 8800.

I'm also interested in the speed of the SD card interface, and what it's bandwidth is on the 8800. That will be very important to smooth video playback.

I don't know what you are trying to do with these detailed spec, but I am kind of surprised that no one thus far has provided such information. I think I read it somewhere...H.264 and MPEG-4 for video, mp3 for audio, png, gif and jpg for pictures, but I know that is entirely not sufficient amount of information for you, so I will try to find out online for you.

At the meantime, I just want you to know that it plays mp4 files fine with very little delay. I will try it with a 500MB 302x2?? 1:40 length 500 kbs Finding Nemo mp4 file tonight for you to see if it can do that.

Edit: Ok, I can't get any file created by HandBrake to play on my 8800. Only PodTube can make compatible mp4 files.

can't be size. I had entire lotr two towers movie encoded down to 750mb play on my pearl. The departed i just loaded on 8800 is 415mb and plays.

what software?
can you teach me how to convert my mp4 to compatible format?

I believe it's not size either. I just encoded 20MB files in avi and mp4, both didn't play.

Now I can play!!!

I just used MEncoder to encode correct avi movie for 8800. Ended up with a 500mb 1 hr 40 mins movie.
I was able to play fine for the first 10 minutes, then the sound went away. When I scroll the seek bar to the middle of the film, an error says it's unsupported format.
I closed it, and reopened the file, able to play the beginning, but always tells me unsupported format whenever I try to play past the beginning.

The avi file plays fine on my computer.
Other mp4 files coded by a different software worked fine.

Anyone has the same problem?

i was having the same problems with 80mb videos i was converting...i ended up downsizing the screen size of the file to 280xsomething i forgot what i used and the jerkyness and audio cut outs went away...ill have to post back what exact size i used...

It's pointless to record something in full screen size. (320x240) since the media player doesn't have a full-screen mode. I've found that @ 172 vertiacal pixles that you can see the video completely. just keep whatever aspect ratio you've got going and everything will be fine! I've also found that cinimascope's aspect ratio seems to fill the whole viewable video area.

Also, just for grins, could someone please verify that the 320 x -2 switch will maintain the original aspect ratio?

These are rough estimates since I have not yet got my hands on an 8800. I am hoping to release the next version soon, I just want to get this right...

I guess I could play Micro$oft and just release 17 patches a month after I release the "finished" version but I am trying to avoid that.

Are you going to create a "maintain aspect ratio" choice that will fit in the space as well. I assume that will take into consideration the player.

if im not mistaken, there was an option for maintaining aspect ratio, even with the bb pearl version of this software.

Well did some testing last night and apparently 320x180 fills the screen perfectly. 280x158 is the smaller size however the 400x225 I've encoded 3 times and each time the top half of my screen is green, the bottom half is black and overlayed on top of that is the video which is an even smaller size than the 280x128 vid.

Edit: I was trying to take an SS for the boards and this time the video ran with no green background, still quite small on the BB screen though. Tried playing a few more times and the size of the green background varies from covering all of the screen to covering none at all.
