Default FYI 88xx DOES have WIFI. confirmed

Please Login to Remove!

Just a quick FYI. Just got back from a convention in Vegas and guess what I saw?
2 Rim people using wifi on their 88xx. Unfortunally I'm not sure which one it was. I was able to hold it and play with it for a bit and see the wifi actually work, but i was not able to view any OS info or really anything else. They were pretty attached to them. They were also able to transfer files from one to the other via a USB cable. Weird hu.

Now, I had never seen an 8800 before, so i cant really tell you if this was an 8800 or an 8820. I'm guessing it's an 8820 since the 8800 has already come out and we know it DOESNT have wifi. At least not cingular's version.

it would be cool to see if it is something that can be changed in an .alx file to unlock the wifi kinda like witht the themes etc.

yea, we wish. I'm sure someone has taken apart their 8800 just to make sure there is no WIFI chip in there.

i may be totally wrong but if you can "unlock" the wifi, i wonder if putting the tmobile firmware (thats if the tmobile has wifi) it will unlock the wifi. just a though....

I have yet to read that someone has done this but I'd find it hard to believe that wifi would just be lying dormant on our units and not useable because Cingular doesn't want that.... wait... err....

Is this really a confirmed fact (who did you talk to with Cingular) or just your take on the lack of BB maps on the 8800?

This is done in order to push their own agenda and products and gain a bit more revenue stream while cutting down a potential influx of support calls for a new feature. Same thing went for BlackBerry Messenger on T-Mobile (until recently). Same thing went for Yahoo Messenger on Cingular. Honestly, it's not that big of a deal if 1 minute of editing a file in Notepad can result in the unlocked capabilities. It's a lot easier than dealing with the idea that the feature would be service book-driven and thus completely up to the carrier to allow it or not (such as Yahoo IM).
