Default Pearl movement stops?

Please Login to Remove!

Yesterday I pull out my 8800 and I couldn't move about the screen with the pearl. The keyboard worked. Pressing the pearl brought up menus. But, moving the pearl did nothing.

I "rebooted"....still nothing. Rebooted again, and it worked fine and hasn't been an issue since.

Has anybody else experienced this?

The trackball probably has dust/dirt in it. Blow in it or used some canned air. You can also push and roll to help get the dust out of it. It's a common problem with the trackballs but usually pretty easy to fix.

I guess I was unclear. The pearl still moves (I can feel/hear it moving), it just doesn't "navigate" me along the screen.

I'm thinking this is a defective unit and I just need to return it....but I was "hoping" I wasn't the only one experiencing this issue.

this has happened with the 8100 and it seems dust covered the contact like ws said try what was recomended and it should work. It worked every time with 8100 when there is no movement on the screen whe the pearl ball is used.

i just had he same problem but my 8800 only moves up and right. I can't move it left or down. I've blown on the roller a few times and its not fixed it. I've had this 8800 for 3 days now and just picked it up and this problem started. It's not been dropped or anything like that. What a pain !

Default Reset causes this

I am now on my second 8800 and I'm seeing the same thing....and I finally have isolated the cause of and "solution" to the problem.

Cause:
After resetting the device, whether using ALT + CAP + DEL or removing the battery, rolling the pearl does not move the "cursor" on the 8800. This happens every single time I reset the device. Pushing in the pearl is recognized, but moving it does nothing.

Solution:
Putting the device in Standby and then bringing it out of Standby. After doing this, the device works as expected. Using the holster or the mute button to get the device to go into standby does the trick.

I can't be the only one that this is happening to, now that I've seen it on both 8800's I've owned.

Yes, it's true, I found my 8800 the same. Have been wondering if mine the only case like that.

I've had the same problem. Must be a bug in the OS.

Interesting you guys. I think I know the actuall problem. I have now had 2 8800's and both have done this. I believe it to be the microSD card putting pressure on the back of the pearl housing and upon reboot it doesn't function. EVERY time I pull the card and reboot it functions. See if you all see the same. EVER boot without the card, the pearl functions. EVERY reboot with it in at boot, the pearl doesn't work. You guys seeing the same.

i think the ball should be slightly bigger and maybe heavier.

it should have more of a glide effect.
