Default T-Mobile with 8707 in Japan

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Guys, Thinking about buying an 8707g in HK to use with my T-Mobile account in Japan when I travel. Does anybody know if the unlimited international roaming covers this type of usage? And, does it work with T-Mobile sim card?

Thank you for your inputs.

I don't know if it will work or not. Most of Japan is on WCDMA. I do remember some poss on here about using a GSM phone in Japan, but I think connectivity was spotty at best. Vodaphone may work.

Lets hope some of the experts here have an answer. You may also want to try searching to see what you come up with.

I checked T-Mobile International Coverage information and looked like they do have one. It's 3G! Here is a note from T-Mobile site:

Rate per minute: $1.99 *Handset rental required
GPRS coverage: Yes

Hello chungs,

I have a 8707v roaming in Japan.

Works no problem.

The 8707g is also a 3G BB, (I've just checked) so that will work no problem too.

There is no T-mobile service in Japan, so your roam on to one of these two 3G carriers. Vodafone Japan or DoCoMo.

Both are fine, and have very good coverage.

When you arrive in Japan.

Go to your Network settings menu, and change your Network mode to "3G" only.

There is no 2G Network in Japan, so having the BB set-up with 2G and 3G will only confuse the hell out of the BB, as Japan has a legacy non-GSM-based 2.5G still running. That is a long story.

So, in short. No problem with a 8707g set to 3G mode only.

I am in Tokyo, so if in Tokyo and you need any help whilst your in Japan. Send me a PIN. PIN Number is in my .sig

-

Regards,

Hayden.

Thank you Hayden-san. One more question, do you know if T-mobile's unlimited international roaming package covers Japan? I would assume yes because Japan is offering bb service now.

Yes. Japan is covered. They would be covered even if they didn't offer BB service.

Hello, again.

I am sure that T-mobile's unlimited international roaming package does cover Japan, however I can't say 100% without checking with T-mobile.

I recommend that you give T-mobile a call, or check the web-site.

dc/dc gave you a reply in the positive, which is a more concrete answer than mine.

In conclusion. I think Yes, T-mobile's unlimited international roaming package does cover Japan, however please check with T-mobile.

Hi guys,

Thank you for your answers. One more thing, since T-mobile does not have 3G service in the US but Japan only works with 3G, would there be a problem?

I don't think so, but it would be good to make sure before buying an extra 8707 for nothing.

Thank you for your input.

Chungs,

That is a very good point you've made !!

I am sorry, but beyond a guess, I don't know the answer.
Can you check with T-mobile, please.

Hayden.

Chungs,

There won't be a problem using the 3g with your t-mob service from the US. Just use the settings Hayden-san stated. Just make sure that unit will work in Japan, I also have a 8707v which works great in Japan but not sure about the 8707g. Keep in mind when you return to the US you will only have GPRS and not EDGE.

Hi Stewsan,

Thank you for your reply. Assum you use Cingular USA and bought a 8707v on your own(checking from other thread). All works? how about data? do you also get charged for it?

Thank you.
