I have an Verizon 8703e. I have read a few threads about unlocking the blackberry device. I wanted to fully understand what the unlocking of the device does.

I understand it frees the device to work with any other company's sim card and prepaid card for when out of the country.

Would this unlock the GPS as well?

Would this unlock the tethered internet? (I know this is available as an add on with Verizon, so it may not fall into the category of 'locked').

Tethered internet... NO if you are using the device ON Verizon network it will NOT matter if it's unlocked or not unless you have the add on plan.......

You can't "unlock" a Verizon phone. A native Verizon phone can only be used on other CDMA networks and with the appropriate software flash. I think the other CDMAs are Sprint, Alltel and US Cellular (maybe?). CDMA phones do not use SIM cards....

SO, if I have a Verizon 8700 series, how would I unlock it to be able to activate it on Sprints network?

YOU CAN'T UNLOCK A CDMA PHONE!!!!

The only thing you could do was call Sprint and try to activate the esn. However, this wouldn't work because the data networks of the different carriers have different data protocols, gateways or whatever you call them. The only thing you could do was find a flash or a hack or something that would allow you to put the Sprint software on your phone. I don't even know if this is possible, though, as I haven't had a blackberry very long and haven't researched it. Hopefully someone with more specific knowledge will pipe up soon for you....

almost perfect, you CAN put sprint "software" on your 8703e but thats like going from windows to windows xp, sort of. its just an os upgrade. your protocol and whatever part was true, though i cant explain it much better either...

Sprint will not allow a non-Sprint branded phone on their network. The same is true of Verizon. Only their phones are allowed. You have a Verizon 8703e. The only network it can operate on is Verizon. End of story.

Unlocking an 8703e
